For you 30 cal. shooters, how many feet per second are you pushing the 210 and 240 gr. bullets from a 30" barrel when shooting at 1000? I would appreciate hearing from as many shooters as possible to get a benchmark .

Emert,

I shoot a 240 SMK at 3034 FPS out of a 30" tube using 82.5 grs. H-1000.

Tom, thanks for the help. I am new at this and trying to figure it all out while living too far away from any 1000yd competition shooters to get any hands on help. With no 1000yd contests in Texas that I know of and the gas so high I may only get to shoot here on the ranch for fun. I would like to try to get my skills and equipment up to a competitive level. I really do thank you for your reply.

Really depends on what case you will be using. I once had a case built on the 404 Jeffries that is a little larger than the very popular 300 Ackley. It would shoot the 240 MK at 3000 fps and the 210 Berger VLD at 3200 fps both about the same as far as accuracy. This was out of a 30" barrel. These velocities are probably about 75-100 fps faster than what most would get from a 300 Ackley.

I shoot a 300 wby...30 inch 1-10 twist Spencer with 210 Berger VLD. I had taken the thing all the way up to 3300 with 85 g RL 25 during load development, just to see where the end was. I setteled on 80 G at 3040 with the bullet .020 into the lands and quite a bit of neck tension. Then I started a new lot of powder, primers, bullets, and brass all at the same time and I needed to start over. I started at 74 gr and did the ladder test again up to 85 g. I ended up at 74 G RL 25 @ 2880. I get single digit ES an little vertical at 1K.

When I was at 3040, everyone said to back it down to 2900 (+20-) to find the best "sweet spot". I did....it worked!! Now that I have found a load that works great for me, a few very knowlagable shooters are saying slow down to 2750 (+20-) to find the best "sweet spot".

ME THINKS THERE IS A CONSPIRACY!! :D :D :D

Hope that helps,
Tod

emert,

I was starting to feel a little short in the velocity department until I read Tod's post I shoot 210's at 2875 fps from a 30" 308 Norma Mag and 2940 fps from a 33" 300 Jones which is a Win Mag mildly improved.

Mr. Tod Soeby, did anyone told you that with these velocities you may just as well go with the .300WSM and save 10 grains of powder?

Con

Accuracy lives between 2800 FPS and 3150 FPS

Pick your bullet, pick the velocity range you want to shoot, pick your case then let the target tell you what speed works.

Todd I have no idea how much freebore. How do I tell? I really appreciate the help. Thanks, again.

To CON:

Yep. I will consider it. It will be up to Clay Spencer....if he thinks a 300 WSM will be a better way to go, I will. If not , I have had great luck with the 3 other 300's that I have.

To LYNN:
I don't get into all of that technical stuff.....I talk with Clay Spencer about what my wants-needs are (caliber, bullet selection...ect) and he makes his recomondations. All I know is that he set it up for 210 Berger VLD's to where the base of the bullet didn't get to deep into the powder colmum. My loaded rounds are 3.795 (+020 into the lands). I am sure for you techniacl-type people he would gladly anaswer your questions.

Thanks,
TOD
