20 ppc

I need help from the experts please.

I am in the process of building a brand new 20 ppc. This will be on a BAT action, Krieger barrel and the goodies to go with. I have a 22 & 6mm ppc and making cases is relatively straight forward for that.

I "want" to order my own reamer and do not want to re-invent the wheel.

I have a Redding 20 ppc die and trying to form a couple good cases to seat the primary bullet I plan to use. I am first taking a multiple fired case out of a 22ppc barrel and stepping down to 20 caliber.

I am getting a slight bulge above the neck shoulder area. I can remover this material with a neck turner, but I am afraid of removing to much material and weakening (too thin) that area of the case.

How does one go about getting what they want?

I realize buying the die first is the carrot in front of the horse and likely spent wasted money.

I am intending to order the reamer from Dave Kiff and just need directions to do this in the correct order and not spend more wasted funds. I also realize that I will likely have to have a proper die made.

I have researched the internet and not really found my answers.
Thank you in advance!
Tony

Buy the die first!

You may end up wanting a form die that does not use a neck bushing to size the necks before the first firing. That is one way to resolve the bulge at the base of the neck. After that, a bushing neck full length die is the way to go.

Buying the die first is not wasted money if you have the means to measure the die and order your reamer with the correct dimensions so that your chamber and size die will be a near perfect match. Not everyone agrees on exactly what the difference should be. I spec my reamer to be .003 smaller than the die at the base and .0025 smaller at the junction of the body and the shoulder.

This works just as well as first building the rifle and then paying for an expensive custom size die and is a lot less trouble.

Contact Kiff. He will have some good idea on how to proceed. At one time Kiff made all the die reamers for Redding. Don't know about now.
I'll send him a link to this thread.

Good info so far, I understand Dave is super busy, I did not want to bother him without some ideas first and then get down to the specifics with a call!

I seldom post here, but read with great interest trying learn as much as possible!
