1911 Barrel ?

I have a 30 year old 1911 bbl made by AMT that has a radial crack at the mouth of the chamber that is visible from the exterior of the barrel. The bbl has never had a round thru it and it is only by luck that I discovered it. How are 1911 bbls made-that is- is the bbl inserted into the hood and welded or (exactly) what? I'm curious, as I've only bought new barrels and never given the process much thought. Thanks...

Older 45 ACP, 1911 bbls were indeed two piece, welded radially at the front of the hood.
