Back a few (maybe several) years ago there was an article in Precision Shooting about a special 22 Long Rifle barrel that had a chamber that tapered down to 17.

The rifle fired a 22 LR which swaged down to 17 as it entered the barrel.

While I remember the article I can not seem to find a copy of the issue it was in.

Can any of you help me find this article?

I am thinking this may be a fun project.

Wow, I would think that would make a bit of pressure and an extremely long bullet.

17 Rimfire and 22 rimfire are two different cartridges. Each require a different barrel chambered specifically for that cartridge. Go to Rimfire Central, they have a section devoted to the 17 cal. It's not a widely used cartridge in benchrest as we know it.

Give Randy at CPC (Connecticut Precision Chambering) a call.

That was the 22 Swager (Modeled after the 22 Extruder that a man in Australia came up with in the '70s). Randy was making barrels for 10/22s in that flavor as well as several bolt guns. Yes the bullet does come out quite long.

Ol' Arthur was ahead of his time. He did the 17HMR first, as well as the 17 MachII - or their equivalent. And he did it back in the '70s. You'd be hard pressed to find a way to get 3400fps from a 17HMR today.
