Would it be safe to say this bbl won't shoot worth a hoot ?? How do you get such consistent reamer marks down in the grooves ? It's hard to tell from the pic but the grooves have the same 'teeth' that the lands have.

My guess it the existing rough marks simply swaged out when it was button rifled.

It might shoot okay until it collected great nasty lumps of jacket material in the bore. Not too many rounds either in a .17 I'd bet.

You don't have to convince me, I've seen the likes of that before.

There are more barrels like that than the manufacturer's would like to admit. They can be thankful that borescopes aren't used by all new rifle buyers or there would be a lot of rifles left at the dealer as unfit to buy.

I have a Savage Model 10 .243 barrel in my shop that has chatter marks begining with lips on the tops of the lands and going all the way through the lands into the bottom of the groove and then some. I should go ahead mill away one side of that barrel and send it to Savage with a note that says their commitment to accuracy seems to have slipped a little. It is truly ugly.

My wife has a brand new never fired Winchester Commerative Model 94. Pretty looking - gold receiver, octagon barrel. Her Dad bought the complete set and gave some to each of his kids. Trust me on this, the pretty stops at the muzzle - that is the second worst looking bore in the house. It has chatter marks full length, raised lips along the top corners of the lands, chips and dings out of the lands and grooves. The only barrel we have that looks worse is the one on her sporterized '03 that was shot with corrosive primers and not cleaned for a few months - that one looks only slightly worse than an unmaintained back country road during rainy season.

The chamber in that Winchester doesn't look very good either and the throat looks like it was done with a dull, overheated and rounded twist drill. All metal smears and scrapes.

But then I have my brother in law's Winchester Coyote here. The factory bedding looks like it was done with a firm grade of rubber cement. I was able to peel some of it out with my thumb nail. The recoil lug and action were sitting on a mattress!

The two best looking factory barrels in my safe are the barrels on my two CZ527's (a Hornet and a .223). They are noticably better than the barrel on my Savage Model 12 LRPV.

I'll probably never buy another rifle with out looking at it with a borescope unless I'm just buying it for the action.
