Ok. So I decided to get serious about a shooting range here in Northern Utah. And so it is!!!
I need your input because I have never been to a range just shoot here on my pace.. I never do things half a$$ed as my dad would say sooooo. I poured a 12x90 pad I'm enclosing 45 feet and just putting a roof and benches over the other 45...On the enclosed part there are 6 shooting stalls each 6 feet wide and one and the end 12 feet.. so please help me with the inside layout/input, shooting windows are 5 wide 4 high see pics. I also dug pits ever 100 yards out to 1600.. one small problem is the way the property lays out only the 12' stall can shoot 100 yards, all the rest start at 200

I got very sick last July and that's what prompted all this... Ya only get one life
I built 1 50x100 barn all enclosed and finished off half of it... Now 2 years after buying this victor lathe. Time to build my first gun..

Perhaps I can be the first to say congratulations on what looks to be a very enviable and enjoyable setup. I'm certain you will get many responses.

all i can say is wow and double wow!!!!!

good for you

You are going to have a BIG problem if not addressed properly.

The noise inside a closed firing range will be UNBEARABLE................................

We have a range close by that is enclosed on three sides and it is nasty!!!

As John S says firing a gun inside an enclosure is terrible loud. If the gun's muzzles are outside the enclosed area it'll help, but they'll have to be outside for sure, and no muzzle brakes in the enclosed area. I used to shoot at a range that for safety reasons had overhead baffles in front of the firing line, a wall behind the line ~20 ft, and walls every 20 ft or so that extended ~8 or 10 ft in front of the benches. Ear plugs and muffs both were required.

Otherwise I'd have to say very nice setup and aside from the noise and being jealous.... :D

My shooting house is 8x8x8 and my window is 18"x18", With my barrel aprox 8" out the window the measured decible increase in the shed is roughly 2-3 decibals higher than shooting in the open grass covered field. I have foam on the cieling and carpet on the floor so this does help with some of the sound, my bench top is also carpeted with indor outdoor carpet.

I have been thinking about taking a 55 gal plastic drum and linning it with egg shell foam and then a wrap of chicken wire to hold the foam to the inner wall of the drum to keep it from "blowing out", cutting a 4"x8" slot in the gun end and a open end for the exit. Just so people in the surounding country side don't have to be troubled with all my shooting.

I love the view, that is going to be a sweet range.

SUPER DUPER!! What a nice way to treat yourself, money well spent! Another good method is shooting thru about 8' of old tires lined with foam and chicken wire. Stringing tires together act as baffles. you won't get much noise reduction until you add the foam! Jack C

Ok so I can add windows in the rear to help with noise.. I just did not want a rainy day to put a damper on shooting and i want the be able to shoot in the winter. The other half will be open with just a roof and a back wall to keep the wind from blowing through.

I have no answers to your questions but I did want to say that you are living my dream. Good for you!

Tim

No the 100 is level.. 200 is slightly downhill... All pits are not level except 1000- 1200 and i wanted it this way.. I'm lucky enough that all do for a living is take people hunting... And long range hunting is caching on like wildfire. Sooo Bench rest situations and hunting can be very different... & based on everything I know about hunting situations is the reason why I doing this,. To teach hunters what really works in hunting situations.. Now on the enclosed part the hallway in the back will be 3'wide and I had planed on building half height walls in the shooting stalls so I can see what everyone is doing.. but based on what your guys are saying should I enclose each stall 6x9?? I really am looking forward to feedback
Thanks

This is a great project!

For sound, You might use carpet and pad on the back wall and hang carpet from the ceiling between the benches.

Keep us informed as you progress.

I like your style.

I am way down South in SE Florida. Starting in 2005 I lead the effort to rebuild our rifle and pistol ranges in Fort Drum, Fl.

I have all the engineering documents including the bench designs. And all the NRA documents and procedures for a safe range operation.

E mail me direct. Anything I have you are welcome to. Documents, drawings and photos I can email to you.

Friggin' AWESOME man!!!!

But these guys are right. I've been using essentially this setup for myself for 5+yrs with one major difference.... I planned/built it with a 5' overhang only 5' above the barrel AND you shoot with your muzzle outside the building. The overhang is enclosed, "soffited" as it were, so that sound isn't directed back.

:)

now some practical thoughts.....

I did the shooting-thru-the-tires thing for a while, I just couldn't work around the nightmares of seeing a little kids face pop up just as I pulled the trigger :(:( (It didn't HAPPEN, I just couldn't get around the fact that I couldn't SEE...)

Also I put out side-guards to keep folks from wandering into the range just because..... and foldout steel guards in each window so no one can walk in front of the window.

I'll post some pix if I can figger out how..

More info please!!! Looks like i might enclose each stall.. 6x9 with a 5X4 window.. How should i lay out the stalls bench design ect, ect....

I'll try some pix.

If it works I might have enough striffin left to 'splain 'em....

Well, looks like that worked...... This is inside the range house with the muzzle out the winder

BG

And here's the same window outside view

BG

And here's a view out the winder on a calm day..... as you can see I ain't got your view!! And if I did it again I'd arrange the windows differently..... Nor can I shoot over 450 from here but hey, it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick! :p

LOL

And I normally shoot through a chrono, or three ;)

Here it is going into the night. Shooting at night isn't nearly as productive as one would first think but it's still cool to get an idea'r at 10:00PM and be able to go act on it. I went until 1:00AM this pertickler time but the night gremlins descended about midnite and really took the fun away......

It do have it's certain charm

I really do envy you the ability to shoot to 1600!!! That's just too awful cool
