1000 yd Savage?

I recently purchased an older Savage 111 (pre-accu trigger) in 7mm Remington Magnum. I am interested in getting into some competitive long range shooting. Is the 7mm Rem Mag capable of being competitive at 1000 yds with the right barrel and load combo? If so, does anyone have some advice for a newbie?

MCrabtree,

Yes the 7mm Rem Mag can be competitive at 1000. Next weekend, there will be a couple of matches north of Cambridge, Oh. in Plainfield. You could load up or buy enough ammo and attend and shoot. It is a benchrest match, so you would be shooting off of a sandbag pedestal front rest and a rear bag.
If nothing else, stop by and observe.

Also, there are two clubs in WVa within a few hours drive of you maybe.

Click on the IBS logo on the home page of this site to locate the clubs and directions from the menu on the left side.

Good luck,
Danny

7mm Mag

It will , but it will beat you up, burn up your barrel, and eat your wallet.

I would change the bolt face (simple job) and go to a more "tame" cartridge such as a 308. Much better barrel life and much less recoil and hunger for powder. Another really good cartridge is the 260 AI, but you will be getting back into the barrel burning out problem.

If you want to stay with 7mm, look at the 7mm-08.

Just my thoughts.

MCrabtree:

While this is a benchrest forum, shooters from other competitive sports do come on and post here. That could be you, it certainly must be Travelor -- I suspect Highpower for him. Highpower has different targets, different rules, different courses of fire.

I've been shooting 1,000 yard Benchrest for about 12 years. Made most of the Hawks Ridge matches and about half the IBS Nationals. I believe I've seen a rifle chambered in .308 Winchester win one relay, never a match. Never seen a 7mm-08 even shoot. One or two .260 Remingtons, don't remember even a relay win for them.

Take Danny Books advice. Go to a few matches of whatever discipline(s) you want to compete in. Don't get wedded to anything until you've done that. Most of us have spent far more than we should have trying to make some of our "early notions" pan out.

listen to two, skip travelor. two who know benchrest vs one who is out of touch. i have shot my stock 7mm rem mag in local benchrest, and i'm still alive and well. ( shooting 168's)

elevation maybe an issue with a hunting scope.

go have fun and then decide what you want to do.

i decided to build a lite 300 win mag for 1000 yd

I have been shooting for several years. Do mostly target and varmint shooting. I have taken coyotes and ground hog with just about every caliber you could imagine. Just looking for something to get into to test my abilities as a shooter. As far as recoil being an issue, I've hunted turkey with the same NEF Pardner for a few years now. Oh, by the way, it's a 10 ga. Recoil?!?! I think I can handle it. I've learned if you don't want the recoil of a magnum, don't buy a magnum. Thanks for your help though.

Yes, 7mm-08 is not a 1000 yd round 7mm WSM could be and as for the magnum recoil,That's why God gave us muzzle brakes..........lol
