Another Bench Rest example.

Joe just finished this one today.
Lets start with the stock, it is a copy of a Bill Pippin made from a piece of spalted pecan, bedded of course.
The receiver is a CST PRO X, he is not making the PRO X anymore, now they will be called Century.
Trigger is a Grand Master taken down to 15 oz.
Barrel is a Shilen 4 Groove Ratchet
Tuner is JNL PRX II
Bolt has been headed spaced and firing pin cut.
Luke shot this in an ABRA match for a trial run and it did very very well. I would like to show you targets, but he was proud of them he took them home.
Take a look.

Lisa

HERESY!!!

Blasphemiousnesss!

It's been years since't I came over to this board (to ask about 10/22's, machined receivers VS cast, Match ammo and because I've some EABCO 17MachII conversions that shoot lights out) and at that time 10/22's were verboten here!

mere TOYS, never to be taken seriously! Looks as though times have changed.....

Nice hunka' wood

Is this rifle located in WA?

Thank you, Joe did an exceptional job on this one!
It is located in the Heart of Texas.

I'm new to the 10/22 in benchrest so here's my question, I'm assuming you have made the changes so it auto loads with low velocity target ammo?

I've yet to shoot an ammo that wouldn't cycle and I only shoot subsonic match grade ammo.

I'm not the guy you're asking but, I've fired or seen fired, subsonic ammunition through dozens of stock and aftermarket 10/22's with nary a glitch. Match and otherwise.

There happens to be a much larger testing ground than BR......the suppressed firearm market is HUGE right now and silenced 10/22's are like the entry level smile maker. If you can shoot a suppressed 10/22 on a gong and not grin like a monkey, you've got no soul.

I have a 10/22 build comprised of a Kidd .920 SS 20" barrel, Kidd bolt, kidd charging handle, and a barracuda stock (I want to change to a benchrest stock but unsure what to get that is reasonable priced). No tuner and shot with Eley match.
I have a 25X mueller scope and just ordered a Leupold 45x competition. I also use the patchworm to clean mine
Here is 9 shot at 50 yards. The OP's 10/22 is much nicer than mine and if I did another one I would just have them build one for me.

Just curious, but why call it a 10/22 if there's nothing Ruger about it? The action looks as similar to a Marlin as it does to a Ruger. Seems like semi-auto .22 benchrest would be a more accurate description.

You are correct but the actual receiver is a Ruger 10/22. There are companies that make 10/22 receivers and they are built to a much higher standard than Ruger. Not all are built into benchrest rifles. I have 3 highly modified 10/22's and only one of those I am using for benchrest

Will these compete with the bolt guns in benchrest today?

That is debatable but I doubt it. I just purchased a bolt bench rifle from Bob Barnhart and from the looks of his targets the bolt is "more" accurate. LOL
I know that is the shooter but it would seem to me that there is more inherent accuracy to a bolt gun over a semi. I have a customized precision bartlein barrel AR 15 that holds its own but again I would look at a bolt gun to squeeze out the most accuracy consistently. I am no expert though

I'm sure it's not difficult to build to a higher standard than Ruger. I guess 10/22 has become a standard name such as make a xerox of a document. I've had fleeting thought about getting into rimfire benchrest but being at the mercy of factory ammo has kept me out. I did a little research on ammo costs and see that I could get Eley Tenex at about $0.41 a round in case lots. I thought that was pretty expensive until I looked at what I was paying for Berger .308 155.5 bullets. At the same lot size I am paying more per bullet than the Tenex. But I get to customize the load. OH well, can't shoot everything.

Don't forget your barrel costs when comparing. The RF barrel can last 100 times as long if cared for properly compared to a PPC.

It's all about the dollars

While a custom built 10/22 can compete with Custom Bolt Action Bench Rifles, You get what you pay for. When I say compete, I mean they will let you shoot it at the same matches. On a local level, maybe, but at a major Tournament and I never say never, but I've yet to see one win all the marbles. I do agree, that if you like to shoot and you want to do it on the cheap, a Semi Auto is the way to go and you can shoot it in two maybe three different Benchrest disciplines, depending on the rules. I have found you still need quality ammo and a great barrel with a match trigger and a solid rest. Wind flags are a must if you want to shoot along side the best. I only wish I could shoot my Dedicated Bolt gun along side the Semi's.

Sirs: I have shot BR50 many times using the 10/22 platform. Actually I am a 1000 yd specialist and use a 10/22 at BR50 to work on bench technique. My limited but often experience is that given the proper 22 ammo the best I could do against bolt guns was 243 out of 250. I got bested by bolt action beauties often shooting 247's. I conclude that in a competitions using only 10/22's there is a nitch for full race 10/22's but bolts rule in the BR50game still it's great fun to compete......There are no losers!!! Be Well V/r mk
