I recently purchased used 24" PacNor 30BR with a 1:18 twist for a Savage. I have a 1:16 twist that I shot the 118s, 125s and 135s with. Can a 1:18 twist handle the 118 BIBs? I have both 7- and 10-ogive in the 118s. Previous owner was shooting the 110s in it. I don't have any bullets that small.

Thanks,

Tiny

1-19" min for 125gr 7 ogive....

YEP....

But..... If its twist is slow a tad you'll still be good. Though the 10 ogives are probably served better with a 17 twist............... (I trust Chris at PacNor to produce button rifled barrels that are damn consistent in twist rate. )

All in all you should be fine Tiny,

Are you going to keep the barrel? If not, give me a hollar.

I'll think about it

I just got a another 30BR for my target action. Let me see how it shoots. I will contact you before I place the PacNor on any forums. I have too many different neck sizes and need to pick one and go with it.

I own 3 Krieger,1X18 twist barrels: 2 on Panda actions H/V & a Hunter Class Kodiak rifle with a Krieger 1x18 twist. The BIB 118 # 10 is my favorite bullet. 2barrels were chambered by Kelbly`s in a .332" neck and ..015" freebore. Kelbly`s now offers a .330" Neck diameter chamber, and that` seems to becoming the standard in 30 BR,or at least most popular. That`s the 3rd. barrel ,and it`s also a Krieger The BIB 118 gr. bullet is built on a 1.00" jacket, with a shorter shank than other 118gr bullets built on .925" jacket and # 7 ogive, but longer shank. 125gr. Bergers do well also with a 1.00' jacket and # 7 ogive.Bergers Like the 33.5grs H4198 fireforming load, but prefer 34.3 grs. in the blown out case.
Try 34.8 grs.H 4198 and 205M primer, with the # 10 BIB 118grs bullets. All my rifles like it,and all like .0035" neck tension ( more than most). I`ve shot the # 7 ogive against BIB`s #10 ogive on the same day with the # 10 ogive taking less windage correction at 200 yards. The above velocity is roughly 3067fps in a 24 " barrels and single digit S.D.`s for 10 shot strings. When fireforming brass use 33.5 Grs.H 4198 in the cases with smaller volume until they are blown out to fit your chamber, and the same bullet. While fireforming with the 33.5gr. load it`s a good time to work on seating depth. It`s been reported that the slower twist torques less in the bags than faster twist barrels, but I haven`t compared them. I believe in operating right on the edge of stability. All the rifles have shot 250 scores in fairly windy conditions,at 200 yards on I.B.S Score targets that our club uses for our matches. Many groups have been in the mid.3`s and some in the .2`s for 5 shots at 200 yards, and that NOT M.O.A ,but actual group size, Good luck .Mike Kerwood, Kodiak Alaska
