When I started to load my .308 Remington, the OAL was 2.8". Then I started to measure the lenght what it shoud be as described here:
<http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=190644>
I had 2.89". This means that the bullet was flying 1/10" in free space. If I use that the bullet is only 0.15" in the cartridge. I also have read that the bullet must be his diameter in the cartridge.
What's the best, the bullet in the cartridge or almost zero free flight?

No Recipe

This is like having the ingredients and no recipe. Thankfully, there is not as many variations as there would be with an angel food cake. Rules of thumb are often refuted by the actual.

If it were me, I would disregard the insertion length and find the optimal seating depth. The better starting point is the bullet touching the lands to some degree. "Optimal" is measured on the target.
