    Important

If you're ever in St. Johnsbury VT Stop in at Caplan's Army Store down on Railroad Street and say "Hi" to Gary Ely, the manager. He's 81 or 82 and it's the only job he's ever had. He loves it, and it suits him. He doesn't look much over 70. Besides his job at Caplan's, he has a ministry too. He...

    Important

Keep on working! I never minded paying taxes, but then, I've never had to live hand-to-mouth either. Somebody has to pay for roads and military and such. It's waste that's galling, and there's plenty of that in government. I'm 67. I don't trust that social security will be there for me at 90...

    Brown Precision burned?

Just found this on Facebook It was posted October 3. "It has been a month now and for those who have not heard, I have some tough news. On Sept. 1, Brown Precision experienced a devastating fire. Luckily no one was injured but the entire building and everything inside was lost. This is...

    Cold Weather Hunting Clothing

Two does came out in the front yard today. They ate grass for a while and then lay down. They guy down the road I call "Double Tap Man" was carrying on with his target practice as he often does for hours. It was extremely loud, but the deer didn't mind a bit. When My wife and I went out for a...

    Cold Weather Hunting Clothing

Color isn't what spooks deer, movement and scent are. I've never seen deer to be affected by me wearing orange as long as I'm still and down wind. I'd rather be safe than dead. I have, however, heard that deer see blue really well. Another good reason not to hunt them while wearing blue jeans.

    Cold Weather Hunting Clothing

Back in 1978 I worked briefly for a motorcycle magazine as a reporter and editor. I learned real quick that sponsors rule and just where I could store my "journalistic integrity". Same thing with hunting magazines. They exist primarily to sell product. Charcoal impregnated clothing...

    Cold Weather Hunting Clothing

There are three ways not to be winded by a deer - 1) stay downwind at all times, 2) get far enough up a tree that the wind is above the deer, or 3) stop breathing. No matter what you have on (or don't) your breath carries your scent. I like fleece because it is warm, light and quiet. It doesn't...

What is the appeal of F Class?

I think F-class is one of the great shooting sports, although I was never very good at it. I have learned more about rifles and ammo and reloading from bench rest, and I think any potential F-class shooter would benefit from some bench rest experience. I quit F-class because of skin cancer and...

Savage 110 Tactical Desert in 6mm Creedmoor

Did some more testing after a benchrest shoot at St. J on Saturday. Wind was variable from the north/northeast at zero to 5 mph or so. I wasn't paying much attention to flags. Shooting at 200 yards, I shot a fouling shot with the Federal Gold Medal Match with 105 Berger hybrids, which was low...

Savage 110 Tactical Desert in 6mm Creedmoor

Mounted up a Bushnell Engage 6-24x50. Nice scope. Sighted in a tad over 1 inch high on my home range at 80 yards. Will try at 200 meters Saturday with the Fed Gold Medal Match with the 105 hybrids. I hope to load up some 108 Bergers if my dies come. I have 20 empty cases now.

Savage 110 Tactical Desert in 6mm Creedmoor

Checked out the bedding today. All seems perfect. Picatinny rail is screwed down solid. Bore and crown are good. No reason for fliers other than the scope. I will mount up another one and try it Friday.

Savage 110 Tactical Desert in 6mm Creedmoor

Finally shot it I took it to the range yesterday. Usually I can bore sight at a 100 yard target and get within 6 inches on the first shot. Not this time. Finally figured out it was hitting to the left of my target backer. I Moved the cross hairs to the hole but still was way off. Finally got it...

Winchester 1885 220 swift 2nd trip to range today

Boat tails won't buy you anything. Try some Berger 50 or 55 grain flat base target. If it won't shoot those, it won't shoot. Do plenty of research before doing anything to that forearm. You may have some luck trying various placements of the forearm (or even barrel) on the rest.

    Winchester 1885 220 swift

Worker. First thing I usually do is bore scope it. If you don't have a bore scope, they are a good investment. Or maybe you know someone who has one. I sometimes lap a brand new barrel if the leade is rough. I've had good results in terms of accuracy and easier cleaning, but I wouldn't do it...

    Winchester 1885 220 swift

Well, I didn't know that. Sounds like a cool gun. I'm still a fan of Burris Signature rings with the plastic inserts that insure positive alignment. I like the Z-rings with weaver-style steel bases (Warne, preferably) but they also make the 30mm for turn-in bases.

    Winchester 1885 220 swift

Well, I'm guessing that it probably has barrel blocks for a micrometer type mount set for an old Lyman, Unertl or Fecker. That's not going to work with your V6. You are going to probably want Weaver type bases or a Picatinny rail. You'll need a good gunsmith, but do you want to drill more holes...

    Winchester 1885 220 swift

Test it anyhow. It's not that hard. A cleaning rod with good bearings in the handle, a piece of tape sticking straight out from it and a nylon brush. Push it in and measure how far you have to go from the tape pointing straight up until it points straight up again. You'll have to do it several...

Savage 110 Tactical Desert in 6mm Creedmoor

Also, I need to find it there is a single shot follower that will fit, because that's probably the only way I'll ever shoot it. Maybe I could even make one.

    Ladder Test

With three shot groups, you don't have enough information to choose between groups 1, 2, 3, 6, and 8. There are too many things that can affect the size of a given three shot group to draw hard conclusions. The goal of the ladder test is to get you close to a good powder charge. This is a...

    Ladder Test

I agree with going up by tenths of a grain. Three tenths is giving you too-wide gaps. If it were me, I'd start at 43.5 and go up by tenths to 44.6 - 12 shots. Find the three closest and the midpoint is your load. With your first effort, you've found two general nodes. The higher one is likely...
