I'm curious... I would think so as well, but what cartridge needs a 5.5" reach? .50BMG is 5.5" *OAL*, and you can stick a thin indicator well inside the chamber! Also, I'm confused by the word "stem" which to me means the mounting end, not the indicating end. Not knocking it in any way...

The topic is too broad... "Stainless" and "Chrome Moly" are categories of steel and it makes little sense to compare the two without getting down to specific alloys. The alloys used for barrel making do seem more resistant to heat, but that doesn't explain the rampant use of stainless alloys...
