RCBS Press Mods for Bullet Making

If you have dies on order with George, see if he'll set you up with his converted Lee Classic Cast presses. I have 5 of them from George and they're outstanding. -Lee www.singleactions.com

    Bullet jacket

I bought a 100 of their 0.925" 30's a few years back, but have yet to try them. They weigh about 3.5 grs less than Hines. I spot checked a bunch and found wall variation to be 0.0003" or less. Someday I'll swage up the lot and see how they fly. To date, I haven't known anyone that's worked...

    18 or 17 in a 30 br

I believe you Tim. All I can say is I've shot .30's in teen temperatures and have never seen yaw in the paper (we do occasionally get sub-20's in Northern VA). Maybe I just got lucky with my 1:18's. -Lee www.singleactions.com

    18 or 17 in a 30 br

Very true Greg. We don't get cold like you all have up Maine. But we do sometimes shoot Winter League in 20's and 30's. I'll definitely be up for the Firecracker next spring. Wayne and I were talking just the other day about booking our rooms. -Lee www.singleactions.com

    18 or 17 in a 30 br

I shoot 1:18" Kriegers with a 114 gr 7-ogive on 0.925's. Some of my best scores have been in really cold weather (we shoot 2 Winter League matches a month in Virginia). Not sure I'm buying the notion that 18 twist 30's give up anything in cold air. -Lee www.singleactions.com

    Bullet swaging questions.

By "BT punch" I assume you mean the point die? Lube isn't your problem. In fact, you're using way too much in my opinion. I use 2.0 grs of pure anhydrous lanolin for 1,000 .30 cals on 0.925" jackets (and 2.0 grs is on the high side). Try screwing the die down a bit. The tip may not be...

    30br 7ogive vs 10ogive?

I went with a 7 ogive on my dies. George Ulrich recommended 7 because they're easier to tune. Talking with .30-cal shooters that have shot both, they confirmed George's advice. Plus out to 300 yards, I'm not sure the added BC buys you much. -Lee www.singleactions.com

    barrel clamping

I think the current trend with sleeves is to simply clamp them to the barrel via the block. I see no need to glue it to the barrel, but perhaps someone knows why that would be advantageous. As for barrel length, there's no set number. I cut mine at 23". 1.45" straight in a delrin sleeve...

    Whidden Dies

Because he asked. I wanted the base sized 0.0005" and the shoulder squeezed 0.001". Pretty common in benchrest rifles, but not so for hunting rigs. John makes lots of different types of dies. -Lee www.singleactions.com

    Whidden Dies

I used Whidden for my .30 Stingray FL bushing die. I sent him three cases which had been fired 3X. Told him how much I wanted the base and shoulder junction sized. It came back exactly as I asked. My concentricity gauge gave it a thumbs up too. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Best bang for the buck in Ultrasonic cleaners

I don't. I prefer having a thin carbon layer in the neck. On primer pockets, I use an old Redding hand tool to knock out the residue. But for handgun and general rifle brass, I do ultrasonic clean every few reloads. -Lee www.singleactions.com
