    222 vs 223

I cannot comment on the cost that you might need to pay any particular gunsmith to make such a conversion. I did mention the bolt and barrel swaps needed to convert to say a 6 PPC. Even $700 would be a lot less than the cost of a new rifle if you decided to change a BAT 222 to a 30 or a 6.

    222 vs 223

One thing to think about: Russ Haydon surprised me with an added bonus feature when I bought the BAT action on my 222. By simply replacing the barrel, you can convert it to any member of the family based on that cartridge including the 223. By replacing the bolt body and barrel, you can...

    222 vs 223

As you may have read, I recently had Russ Haydon build my first centerfire benchrest rifle. After many hours of research, I chose .222 Remington as the cartridge. There were several factors in this decision.: 1. Though the 6 PPC is the latest and greatest, there are records still held by the...

    The Haydon BAT 222 Rem.

I may have overstated my ignorance a bit ( I prefer that to overstating my knowledge). I am aware of barrel twist. My rifle has a 1:14 twist, making 50 gr. - 55 gr. bullets the best. I am using 52 gr. Berger target bullets and Lapua brass, while I test different powder loads. My...

    The Haydon BAT 222 Rem.

I keep getting these questions about the action, trigger, barrel etc. Each part of the rifle is what Russ recommended. After doing my own research, I asked Russ to build me a 222 Rem with a left handed BAT action, Jewell trigger and Kreiger Barrel. Then fit it to the Kelbley HC FB stock...

    The Haydon BAT 222 Rem.

Many times in my life, I have been at the right place at the right time or met eactly who I needed to meet right at that moment. Meeting Russ and Marsha when I was first getting serious about shooting was one of those times. Actually it was another gunsmith (Tim Mullins) who sent me to Russ...

    The Haydon BAT 222 Rem.

The Action is a left handed BAT SB14, 1.4MF. First, I intend to shoot the rifle for the fun of it. As to competing, I will eventually attend a match or more and shoot along with the rest. Whether or not I will actually be competing remains to be seen. I am aware that I got into this game...

    The Haydon BAT 222 Rem.

Yes, the Russ Haydon 222 Rem. BAT has arrived. Russ and I took it to Tacoma R&R yesterday afternoon to start breaking in the barrel. We were cleaning after each round and fired only about 15 rounds all together. The trigger is so light that I never felt in control as it went off. As a result the...

    One of my better investments

You have what you need already. All of the pictures I have posted on this site, RFC, Disableds Riders, etc. were taken with an old Nikon Coolpix 995 (3.3 megapix). By stabilizing it with a tripod I get sufficient resolution to show detail as fine as any I ever got with my old expensive roll...

    One of my better investments

A Conservative Approach to Wealth Management All of the strategies of buying stocks, gold, etc. look like gambling to me and I don't gamble. The run up in the price of gold is based on the same kind of irrational exuberance that drove up home prices over the past several decades. Gold has...

    .243 in BR

And here I thought the greatest threat to barrel life was muzzle velocity. That's what everyone who trashes my 220 Swift always says. "You' got yourself a real barrel burner there," is the constant refrain. I have only fired a bit under 1,000 rounds with it so far, so I cannot say for sure...

    22/250ai Verses 220 Swift

220 Swift Still King As Zeke says, there is a lot of misinformation floating around about the 220 Swift. The 220 Swift has greater long range accuracy and hits harder at any range, as compared to the 22-250. With different powders and bullets I have successfully loaded my 220 Swift with...

    .243 in BR

My apologies. I assumed all centerfire benchrest competition was being discussed on this forum. When I eventually get bored with my 222, I will be looking for a longer range rifle. I once owned a 243 Winchester Model 100 semi-auto. It was so inaccurate I never considered the cartridge as a...

243 on Accurate Shooter Not a Benchrest Target Rifle?? I am not sure why people offer answers, without doing the research first. Here is an extensive discussion of the 243 as a target rifle fron the site Accurate Shooter http://www.6mmbr.com/243Win.html Here is an excerpt from the article...

    Any Experience with 222 Remington?

Final Specs on the 222 It's a done deal. Russ Haydon and I have made all of the important decisions. It will have a BAT action Krieger Barrel, Jewell trigger and a Kelbly HC FB stock in metal flake blue, as in the picture on the Kelbly site: http://www.kelbly.com/kelblystocks.html The BAT...

    Any Experience with 222 Remington?

I see the 222 as strictly a 100-200 yard gun. At those ranges, the superior shooter will have a fair chance against the shooter with a similar rifle in 6 PPC or 22 PPC. Beyond 200 yards, I have my (3800-4200 fps) Ruger No. 1 220 Swift. I constantly have to show my 220 Swift targets to other...

    30 PPC a fad ?

Absolutely!!! No amount of logic, no real world facts or even experience can overcome such misplaced passions. Once the blinders go on, it's all over.

    Any Experience with 222 Remington?

Del, At this point, I am completely committed to the Russ Haydon build. I already gave him a deposit on the BAT action. Next Thursday, I am driving down to Gresham Oregon to visit Wright's Gunstock Blanks: http://www.wrightsguns.com/black_walnut.html I have spoken with Doyal Wright on the...

    Any Experience with 222 Remington?

I appreciate the idea of buying used. There is a greater difficulty in finding left handed than you might expect. Then the seller expects a premium price. That is one of the main reasons why I am having a rifle built. As mentioned I cannot operate a right handed rifle with any comfort or...

    Any Experience with 222 Remington?

While the 223 Remington shares many of the same attributes as the 222; the 222 is inherently more accurate and has history that the 223 cannot match. As Russ Haydon said, a 222 is a 56 Chevy Convertible. Similar to my Vickers Martini 22, not everyone has one and it evokes an earlier time. The...
