It stops you rubbing the rod down the barrel. The jag end is held up by the cotton patch but the other end rubs down the barrel on the push through and then the jag end rubs from the muzzle end on withdrawal but the rod guide keeps it from rubbing on the chamber end. Also helps keep oil etc out...
