My last Shilen took about 3-4 weeks.

    Monarch 10ee for chambering

I have a Nardini 1440 and if I have to do a barrel that is too short to fit through (lots of them are) I have a series of bushings that are slip-fit to the spindle. I then use Gordy Gritter's method of indicating to see if the chamber end is straight enough. If it's not, I can use a piece of...

    338 Lapua Build Question

OK, If you have done your research, you will see that the Lapua magnum case is insanely over-built. It weighs at least a 100 grains more than a 338 RUM case. It is a military cartridge meant to be built on big actions. I did my homework (all prior to the advent of the RUM case) and decided on a...

    What's a great gun oil ?

I believe it is called "Boeshield" and it does work if you can get it. Break Free works very well but you have to remember to shake it up.

    Nightforce rings and bases?

Did one with the Nightforce rings and one with the Murphy rings. I think the Murphys are as good as it gets. Nightforce has some half Ti rings that cost more and save a few grams. Those are the ones we used on a 7x300 WBY. Both are very good though.

    Nightforce Japan?

I also heard that the engineers that worked at Nightforce (Japan) said that they could make them sharper, better, stronger (you get the idea) and they kept getting shut down so they started their own company (Deon Optical) and made the March scopes, which are better glass, more zoom range and ....

    heartbroken

Last tap I broke was a 1/2-13 making a barrel vice out of "mystery metal". I used a 1/4" carbide end mill to hog it out. I then decided to scrap the whole thing and started over with a 4140 block. I don't think I will try to tap any more steel of dubious origin, too much work only to have to...

    barrel recomendations

I have no experience with 300 RUM but a lot with 6.5-284; both competition and hunting. In a hunting rifle, you don't need more than 25-26". If you really won't have to carry it much, go ahead and get a #7 contour. Heaviest I have built in a hunting rig is #5. Unless you have elk on the menu...

The Voyeur's Guide to Barrel Chambering

German, I think you got all the photos flipped in backwards, the bolt appears to be on the wrong side of the action!!:)

    Rechamber

Before you punch it out, why don't you pull the barrel and see if a RUM case will fit. I promise you it won't even come close. We have never been able to make full-length (H&H) on Ruger Mark I, Mark II or Hawkeye actions without extensive modifications. A RUM is the length of an H&H and then...

    !&$#.... Remington arms...

I measured mine with a digital mike. My readings were very repeatable. Both were out 2-3 tenths. I think they can be thin enough to have some flex. Not sure at what point that is. I suspect that for a rifle that gets really beat around and dropped etc. a stronger lug can't hurt but I can't see...

    Rechamber

If you are asking if the 'chamber will clean up' then the answer is yes. That said, however, the Ruger 77 Hawkeye is not anywhere near long enough to accommodate a RUM length cartridge. If you have the discontinued Ruger magnum rifle, it is big enough.

    !&$#.... Remington arms...

Mine were not that good- averaging about 2-3 tenths. The two lugs I checked were about .185 and .188" respectively; quite a difference between them. I flatten them on a ground and diamond impregnated lapping plate to knock off any burrs etc. If you want them really flat, I guess you have to...

    Rem 700 thread pattern action

The Predator action is NOT a benchrest action, it is a repeater with a magazine cut out and a corresponding large loading port. The bolt has most clearance than one would typically expect on a pure BR action but is far, far better than any 700 action.

    sandblasting woes

I just saw this, I by my media at Graingers. Surely, you have one in CA?? I don't use silica sand, it is bad news for sand blasting (health-wise), I use Aluminum Oxide grit and beads. It is not cheap however you get it, I think it runs about $60 a box.

    !&$#.... Remington arms...

Thanks, Mickey, I got a couple from Terry. I also ordered some from Numerich so I could have some of different thicknesses for headspacing reasons. I lose stuff all the time, that is why I put each gun in its own big zip loc bag. This lug must have been able to pass through plastic, molecule by...

Thanks for the offers. I have a couple coming. I just have to shake my head at RA reluctance to sell a little stamped piece of steel!!
