    What Caliber

Just shooting off a bench against yourself, you can do just about anything. Are you going to reload? Are you limited to factory rifles? I own both 243 and 260 hunting rifles. They are both fine hunting and tactical cartridges. They are not the best choice for a 100-600 yard target rifle...

    What Caliber

Wayne, A couple of questions: 1. Are you shooting in formal matches, local matches or informally. 2. When you say "benchrest", what do you mean by it? There are multiple games under there. With that said: One cartridge, the 6 PPC dominates from 100-300. Another, the 6 BR, or improved...

    6 PPC bullet seating depth

With a 30, you can use the lands or full jam as your point of reference. Doesn't matter. Depending on powder, etc, though, the basic recipe that works for a 6 PPC ain't a gonna work with a 30 PPC. A 30 PPC is inherently a 30, not inherently a PPC. Look back here about what I said about a 30...

    The Factory Side

I don't think that there is a rash of cheating. I do think that it can get to be a very expensive game. At the most simple is buying and selling Savages till you find a winner. Then, there is the Cooper route. Have it rebarreled if it doesn't shoot or is shot out. Make sure that they give...

    6 PPC bullet seating depth

You're wasting time, money and barrel life testing with five shot groups. Shoot three shot groups during tuning. Even then, if you shoot a good shot and the second goes way out, save the third.

    The Factory Side

Just my $0.02. Factory is *great* as an on-ramp for new shooters. When it gets to be seasoned shooters competing in Factory and in aggs that involve Factory, it rapidly gets to be much more expensive than custom.

    Another ? on Windflags

IMHO, the real trick to Mike's flags is using them in conjuction with a sail tail. I use Dave Halblom's. The spinner on Mike's flag is so light and quick that it replaces the surveyor's tape on normal flags. So, you watch the spinner for pick up, let off and, once you get used to them...

    Barrell length/velocity relationship?

I've never had the situation in a CF, but in a RF, it is well-established that max velocity is with a 16-18" barrel. Edit: I remembered a practical test about the question. Looked it up: http://www.6mmbr.com/blogjan2006.html .

    Tuning N133

Jack Neary says: "We throw by volume but we shoot by weight". My first suggestion would be to throw by weight, to use a ChargeMaster on a battery pack, but that might be a problem. Second, would be to separate the variables and determine them in isolation before putting them together. For...

    Michigan Folks - Larry Feusse

Could someone tell Larry that I'd like to speak to him briefly. He has no PM or email address here. Two phone numbers. Seems rude to call a stranger out of the blue, though.

Is Larry still with us? I would like to briefly talk with him about his 30 Gorilla.

    6 PPC bullet seating depth

OK, here is a plan. It works for me. I don't make any claims for it. It involves making a dummy round to create a known reference point. 1. Prep one piece of brass as normal. Do not seat a primer. 2. Strip your bolt so that you have better feel and for safety. 3. Set the seater stem long...

    284Win vs 280 Rem/ 7x64

I'd put more on the table: 1. Consistent powder charge to or near the kernel of powder. You can get pretty close with a good beam balance. 2. Consistent neck tension / seating effort. Anneal. Polish the inside of the neck. Sort by seating force. 3. Consistent bullet bearing surface...

    IBS Resiprosity ??

The bottom line here is that we're going to have to deal with the minor expense and hassle of it or avoid the issue by shooting in non-santioned matches or yet other formats.

    284Win vs 280 Rem/ 7x64

Petr, I have a friend who is a PhD radio chemist. He works. He does not teach. He's very accustomed to taking and recording precise measurements. He recently did a box of premium 30 caliber match bullets by bearing surface with my Mark King/John Buhay (see...

I hate to ask this question on the benchrest forum

If you price PCP guns, don't forget the cost of the bottle, regulator, etc. It can be as much as the rifle.

    284Win vs 280 Rem/ 7x64

Petr, I cannot address all of your questions directly. As no one else is posting, I do have a few thoughts for you that might get you pointed in the right direction or, at least, prompt others to jump in. 1. Without knowing what form of match you are shooting in, it is hard to discuss the...
