    Leadscrew Freeplay

Jerry, I believe you have misunderstood me. I'm measuring the end play at .001 by measuring from the end of the leadscrew, not the saddle, just the leadscrew. I noticed yesterday that whith the indicator on the saddle I get .007 so the half nuts do have some clearance.

    Leadscrew Freeplay

That's a great question Chet! ? Replace them with new old stock half nuts to the tune of about $350. I was thinking about my big 16" machine that I adjusted all of the clearance out of. This big grizzly is the reason I'm thinking about my heavy 10, I adjusted some clearance into the leadscrew...

    Leadscrew Freeplay

Jerry, I think I have it to tight. I clamped the leadscrew in a vise (with brass jaws) and setup an indicator on the gear box then tightened the leadscrew nut until I had the .001, I really believe I'll see an improvement if I go back and give it some clearance.

    Leadscrew Freeplay

Someone with a South bend heavy 10 that cuts great threads check your leadscrew freeplay and tell me what you have. I set an indicator on the end of the leadscrew, engauge the half nuts and rock the saddle handwheel left and right while watching the indicator. My lathe has .001 freeplay I'm...

    TIG welder

Drink a Miller and weld with a Lincoln. You work within a mile of Gano, that's where I bought my Lincoln Square Wave 200. No need for water cooling the welder for short welds on bolt handles. The tig 200 has a variable pulse option that can be set so the current is constantly pulsing up and down...

    Custom Rimfire Actions

There was a lot of talk about slugging on these forums when I was a competitor and "not" a gunsmith. When I started gun smithing I bought a Gritters video about evaluating rifles for accuracy problems and brass rod so I could slug the barrels I was chambering. I still slug most of the barrels I...

    Custom Rimfire Actions

Tim, it kinda makes me wonder too. I have avoided rimfire as much as possible mostly because of the stories I read about smith's shooting and indexing the barrels and shooting again to get to a certain level of accuracy before the customer gets his rifle. I've been chambering center fire...

    Custom Rimfire Actions

Did Bill Calfee have something negative to say about the Stillar 2500X? Was there any one specific action that Mr Calfee praised for its perfection and ability to shoot killer accurate groups without modification?
