You long distance guys; 6mm twist suggestions please for 75-87gr, and, 87-105gr

My 10 twist 6br

lothar walther barrel will handle the 87 v-max and the 90 grain Berger well enough for varmints but will not shoot less than 1 inch with 107's. Stay with the 8 twist if you have to shoot that long of a bullet.

VaniB,

A 12 twist is on the edge for an 87 Vmax. A 10 would be best. The 8 tw is good for 105, but cost you speed for the 87. I know guy with 1000 Kills on groundhogs with the 87 V max out of a 6mm Rem. I think the 87 Vmax is the best 6mm long range varmint made.

Good luck

I agree with everything you said. I now believe a 1-10 is perfect for an 87 and would work fine with the 75 too. I think a 1-12 would be preferred if I was shooting at 6-284 velocities. (For some reason, a 1-11 isn't commonly offered or that might have been the best)

And I believe a 1-8 would work great with the shorter non-VLD Hornady 105 Amax, but feel it's too fast for the 87Vmax. (as others here are saying)

I'm surprised nobody has said anything about the 1-9 twist. Seems there's a lot of 1-9 1/4 Remingtons out there shooting the 105 real good.

Here's one such report I saved from the archives:

"The answer is YES!!! A 105AMAX will stabilize in a 9 1/8 twist barrel! I shoot 105AMAXS in a 6mmRem VLS and it does 10 shot groups in the 12"-15" range(10 shots) at 1000 yards! I use Reloader 19 and also H-1000 with the 105's! GHD -Groundhog Devastation(GHD)"

But admittedly, I've also read a couple of other posts that seemed to be less enthusiastic about the 1-9 twist and the105Amax. Seems these other posts suggest that I would need to be firing the 105 Amax at 6-284 sought of velocities for stabalization beyond 200 yards. A 6x47Lapua has only got a muzzle velocity of maybe 3,000 FPS.

My Choice

If you like the 105 A-Max get a 8.5 twist barrel and shoot very small groups with it.
Robert Hoppe holds the record for the smallest group ever fired at 600 yards regardless of which organization you shoot and he was using the 105 A-Max bullet. His group was 0.5823 inches for 5 shots or smaller than a dime.
