One thing to watch out for with the cheaper tripod stands is that they often don’t go down low enough for some ranges. The cheaper stands usually have fewer sections making each section need to be longer to get up to the usual 6.5-7 feet. Stands that have more sections (usually more expensive) can usually go down lower, while still able to get up to the same height. On some ranges it’s not a problem but on others you need quite a low stand in order to be legal. (a line from the top of the bench to bottom of the target) I generally like a stand that will go down to around 24” or so. That will be low enough in most (not all) situations. It is good to have several different heights of stands available to use.

B&H Photo has some very nice Lighting stands for about $20. each plus shipping. I bought 5 of them and like them. I find though that the poles I bought from Daivid Halblom get used the most. If a person is handy they can go to WalMart or other places that sell Chineese Golf Ball Retrievers and make their own to save a few bucks but if you aren't or can't David's, for the price, are dern good IMHO.

A pain with using lighting stands is they are fairly easily blown over if one doesn't weight them or peg them down. It's a lot less hastle to push or drive a single spike in the ground and be done with it. They are also easier to pick up @ the end of the match.

I would prefer to have Stainless everything but find Aluminum to be an acceptable second.
