Winchester Stealth

Hi Guys,

I have a Winchster Stealth in 243 WSSM to re-barrel in 6.5x47 Lapua.

How would you guys deal with the bolt-face? Or would you simply buy a new bolt from Winchester? Does anyone do a custom bolt for the Stealth like Dave Kiff's Remington replacements?

Thanks in advance

One thing to remember is the .243WSSM is a short fat little booger! How are you going to get anything but a short fat little booger to feed is the question????

Well Dave, I was kinda hoping you would help me out with this one!

I'm wondering about trying a Savage bolt-head conversion - any obvious snags?

Yes Jeff - the 243 WSSM is very short but so is the 6.5x47 Lapua loaded with the 108 grain Lapua Scenar.

Vince, I would love to help ------

you out, as much as you have helped me over the last couple of weeks, you are a real gent, thanks:)

I do have a really nice hardly used southbend you could throw it in.:D

Regards

Col.

Jeff,
I owe you an apology - you were right - that 243 WSSM is SHORT - 2.2 inches! No chance with the 6.5x47 Lapua, it will have to be a 6BR!

Hi Vince

Never heard of anyone doing a Savage conversion on a Winchester. You had better look at the lug size. Another thing is the rails are probably much to wide to feed a BR size case. Have to say much like the 243WSSM none of this makes much sense.

Hi Dave,

Your input is appreciated.

I'm going to try and get a new bolt with a 308 face first off. But it won't be easy over here with our importer.

Cheers

Vince no worries, all I wanted you to see is the rails are very wide like Dave just spoke of. No other type of case will feed properly unless you work it out of a clip that you will have to align and fit to work. The length isn't so much of a problem since you could weld shoulders into the magazine box to prevent the rounds from surging forward.

As to the bolt swap, my advise would be to find you a sacrificial lamb to work with the bolt alone or maybe just sell what you have and buy a different platform to work with.

Hi Joe,

Interesting site - much discussion on barrel-life!

OK - here's the story with mine. A fellow journalist bought the rifle new to review for our magazine. He put around 1000 rounds down it - factory and home-loads - but never got a decent group. It suffered from hard extraction (which Dave Tooley has explained) and then the bore began to copper-up badly.

The borescope revealed a seriously fire-cracked first nine inches - it's had it!

In the UK, a new match barrel fitted would cost about $1000 - more than a new rifle and then - unless a new bolt was obtained it would still be WSSM.

My buddy wasn't prepared to sell-on the rifle to some unsuspecting shooter, so he decided to scrap it. I expressed an interest so he gave me the rifle and challenged me to turn it into something which would shoot.

I like the idea and it will hopefully make a good project for the magazine.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Guys,

Bushing the bolt-face was my intention - until I saw it. That's when I posted on this forum for help.

Some friend you have.

Give it back to him.

You can polish a turd but in the end all you have is a shiny turd.
