How difficult is it to chamber a Wilsons seating die blank ? Should a competent machinist or gunsmith be able to do this?

Really about the same as cutting a chamber with your match reamer. It’s just having a bushing big enough to fit the bore to keep the reamer on track.

Anyone know what size bushing is needed for there 30cal blank?

And for possibly stupid question. Where can be bushings be bought? Can you only get them from reamer manufacturers ? Or can they be got from a machine shop?

I had to get the blanks and measure. Wilson should be able to get you close if you call them.

Most of the reamer manufacturers use similar bushings. I know I can use JGS and Manson interchangeably.

Anyone know how long the Wilson blanks are? Could I get a .338 blank and chamber it for .375 cheytac?

I have 2 Wilson blanks and maybe 6-7 Wilson seaters and altho they vary in size none of them are nearly long enough for CheyTac's. That said, LE Wilson makes custom stuff AND they make quite a few 50BMG tools and an oversized casegauge so while I know they CAN do it, I will (guess) they don't stock the biggie blanks.

When I've called they've picked up. PST timezone

I've emailed them and they said they don't do custom ones. The blanks say they are extra long so you can cut to size but it doesn't give a dimension of exactly how long. I guess I can just buy the top and get my own piece of steel for the body, just thought it would be easier if their blank would work.

OK, here's what I would do then.

Buy a 375, blank OR full-on seating die (I THINK that's what you really want??? I don't know why you mention 338...?.....)

ANY 375........because the pita part is the seating stem

cut or re-cut the body as needed

I wouldn't even have to add onto the bottom. Seating bullets with an inch of case hanging out of the die is no different than burying it clear to the extractor groove

lol
make a spacer base like lee has done on hand loaders for years.
slightly over dia so a lip is possible to center the seating die.
if you put a thru hole slightly bigger than a primer, it becomes
a de-priming tool also.

If it is a one time affair, you can make a bushing. Use a grade 8 bolt.

Since the bushing won’t be hardened, just take it easy.

I would indicate the die body True, then remove most of the stock with a drill and then a boring bar. Just ream for the final size.

OK..... not trying to be nit-picky but have any of you ever handled the CheyTac cases? I'm not a fan...... even though there are three of them in my shop right now, I'll never buy the reamer BUT, I do have them to hand.

What I'm saying is..... really, THERE IS NO REASON to bury that case!

Think about "support at the base" or "support over the entire case body" in terms of this pertickler case VS say a 6PPC. On the PPC, if you knocked an inch off the die you would have no guiding means. But here's what I'm saying. That stupid CheyTac case is longer than the friggin' BLANK! You stuff 'er into a 378 Weatherby die (which DOES seem long enough to provide guiding means) and half of it's still hanging out the butt!

But that doesn't mean it's not entirely supported and guided :)

The reason I mentioned the 338 was only because it was the largest blank listed on the wilson blanks.

I was hoping to make a bushing neck die and a seating die. I hadn't even thought about the seating stem yet

Hokay HOKAYY!!!...... I make, and modify, and have had made for me, a lot of dies.

Your post said SEATING die.

Seating dies are baby-cakes..........

SIZING dies are a whole nuther can a' beans..... a WHOLE nuther........

I've spent 25yrs with this conundrum. I use only specifically fitted dies. Simply the best deal on the PLANET right now is a Whidden die for 125 clams. But they're 4 months out.

I've not mentioned this here nor anywhere's else But for SIZING I just recently ordered a dozen Redding Type 'S' dies (77223, 77446, 77489) and have been re-cutting them. This costs more than a Whidden because cutting them to fit my chambers on manual equipment isn't an incidental machining process BUT, I can have a die the next day.....

That works.

Really WORKS.......
