Why the "demotion"?

Well, I'm not Wilbur, and I suppose we're on each other's ignore list, but I'll give my feelings without prejudice just this once. Maybe it's what they call a "communications thing," but I doubt it.

First, there is a difference between "new to BR Central" and "New to Benchrest." The "new to benchrest" guys need careful help and encouragement. The experienced, but new to the forum, are on their own.

There are several kinds of abrasiveness too. I have one. You have another, the "I'm always right and your opinion doesn't count" one. You talk about moderators as "having power." I don't think any of us, about minute 5 after Wilbur told us we were moderators, thought about power, except in the "Oh $hit" context.

Recent examples of what I mean -- which may not be what you meant, but it sure comes across that way:

Guy wants to know what bag works best with his Borden stock. We say "Ask Borden" You say, "Nonsense. I know the answer" and give it. Then Jim comes on & says, "uh, actually, I do things a bit differently..."

Guy wants to know about the cruiser rifles. If you pay attention to the board, you know he shoots 600 yards, and can probably simulate shooting a cruiser himself without any more cash layout. He would learn something from that. But you say "Nonsense. Don't bother. A rail is it."

This answer to a maiden's prayer attitude don't cut it with me, and I'm abrasive enough to say so. If I thought it was miscommunication, I'd say that. I will allow I could be wrong.

Now boys, play nice;-)

I think that the whole point of a site like this is to be able to solicit opinions from a large group of shooters, with the understanding that opinions vary. If a reply is viewed by some as being incorrect, or unresponsive, it may be useful in the sense that it may provoke more and lengthier responses than if the first answering post was rather brief, but more generally recognized as correct.

What it really comes down to is that as long as the answer is not dangerous, and does not attack someones business, or another poster, and is not about selling cell phones or the like, it probably passes the smell test, and will survive. On the other hand, when we start talking about someone, or to someone in an unnecessarily negative manner, that can be a different matter. It will more than likely make our sport, ourselves, and this site look bad. After all, what we write on the internet, may be seen by the world. Sometimes I think that this is forgotten in the heat of the moment.

Goodgrouper - I can easily answer the question of what criteria is/was used to select moderators. At the time of "appointment", the site was getting a lot of spammers. Suggestions were made to allow some moderators such that they could more quickly remove the spam. I simply chose the folks that I trusted and most likely to be online when said spam occurred.

Thingings I have learned about this site . I,m not a new Rifle shooter and not new to web sites .
This site is better then most there is still the know - it- all but a lot of good info .
Being i live in Indiana formal(read that as in organized) bench rest shooting is nonexistent . If you like to shoot a rifle you do it yourself and have your own rules . In this state anything over 300 yards is impossible at any ranges close . Still a good place to learn stuff .

Your response shows you have a burr under your saddle with my name on it and that is making you "read" things that aren't there. For instance, go back and look at the bag thread carefully. You will see that there was no "we" in referencing Borden--unless you had a mouse in your pocket at the time? YOU were the only one who referenced Borden. Secondly, you will see I never said the word "nonsense". All I DID say was this: "If your Borden stock is a Robertson make, it has a 1/2" flat. Mine likes to ride on the bag, not the ears so a gap of 1/2" works best." Notice I said "MINE"! Then the OP said he in fact did have the 1/2" flat and I then said, "I've had several rear bags but the current one is by far the best I've tried. It's a Protektor DR. bag." Notice again I said, "the best I"VE tried". Then you came on and said what basically sounded like to me that anyone's opinion, no matter how much personal experience they may have with the question, is absolutely useless and merits no attention paid unless that person is a HOF member. You may have had a different intent, but that's how I and several others took it. Since you give advice based off your personal experiences and you're not in the HOF, does that make any advice you give less important to you?? Then you completely missed the fact that the reason why the OP asked his question was to find out about ear gap for the stock he had, so he already had decided to go that route, but we needed to establish just how wide his stock was. You might have seen that if you weren't already looking for something I said that you could sink your teeth into. Borden then comes on (which I wonder if you didn't alert him to the thread so you could have me "proved" wrong) and says simply that he prefers his guns to ride on the ears. Then he sees my setup and freely admits that there are many ways to skin the cat and we agreed. The only guy who got a bad taste in his mouth over the whole thread was you!

Next, you want to go to the cruiser thread. OK, let's look at it too. No, I don't know every shooting discipline that Skeet is into, and frankly, I don't care. He asked a specific question within the realm of what I know, and I answered it as best I could. I never said anything like, "Nonsense. Don't bother. A rail is it" as you so creatively imagined. All I did is put forth my guess as to why we don't see many cruisers and why rails have taken over. You acted like your mother was a cruiser and I had just slapped her. But then you said, "Problem is, unless you want to carry both to matches, you're probably better off carrying the rail. Certainly you'll look better." which is basically what I suggested is it not??? Oh, and let's not forget your little jab you had to squeeze in there which I see you have still not corrected. Maybe it was an honest spelling mistake, but something tells me you meant it exactly how it was typed. Tell me I'm wrong.

Come on Charles, you're old enough to know better. Guys your age are supposed to set the example, not act like this. After spending as much time on the planet has you have, I'd a thought you'd have learned a thing or two about how to treat people. Yeah, so there's a couple of other guys around that are younger and can answer questions as well as you, so what? Why make enemies of them at the earliest possible opportunity? Why not go the other direction and make them your friends? Life would be better for everyone.............

Thanks Wilbur. Now it all makes sense.:)

Jeez...I thought it a simple disagreement in terms. Didn't realize individual philosophy was so deeply rooted as to interfere with mere discussions about shooting. I wish I could help...but I ain't goin' there until I have to.

Wibur,
Shooting? I thought that this had become a contest as to who could post the most irrelevant (to shooting) gas. I have yielded to your obvious good judgment, and deleted my gas, in the hopes that this makes computer monitors more secure from taking off like so many hot air balloons.

Just about the time I get something going everybody deletes their posts. OK, I had an admin meltdown early this morning so I can relate to most anything at the moment. We'll all study about it for awhile...

Appreciate the thanks!!!

Lynnsr - you've been misinformed somehow. Do you work for the postal service as well? If you do, please pass my thanks to everyone for getting my stuff here quickly and safely.

Too bad some of the mods didn't have the tact and level-headedness that you possess Jackie! Never saw you in one instigational manuever in the ten years I've been visiting here.

Btw, where ya been lately?

Guys, I monitor the board daily, but as most know, my shooting is sufferring at this time because of work. Saturday is simply just another work day, and every other Sunday is about the same. I just gave up trying to juggle schedules. Several times I have had everything loaded, ready to go, only to have the phone ring and all plans change.

We are caught up in a "new construction boom" that has had us snowed under for the past year. This is in addition to our normal repair work. I know many will say, "you can't take it with you", but I have been through reccessions where we did not have one job in the shop. You make it when you can.

I will be back. Just as this boom has made our business go up, it will surely go down. It always does.

I am also spending a lot of time with my custom 67 Chevelle, which I have had for over 18 years. I just had one of the new TCI 6 speed automatics installed, my next move is an all aluminum 540 inch Rat. That "sedate" 480 incher, which makes about 550 HP at the crank, just seems a little tame as I grow older.........jackie
