Why the "demotion"?

I guess I missed it, but is there a reason why there are no more moderators here anymore? I see that they are now just "registered users" like the rest of us. What was the cause of the "demotion"? And who's this Administrator fella with a cartoon avatar?? It ain't Wilbur unless he's got two login names?

Yeah, that's Wilbur. He never told me why I was retired. I suspect he just finally gave up some of the control to the anti-whatever software; and, it seems to work pretty well.

Well, we were running off all the jackass's, and Wilbur was afraid you young gunslingers wouldn't have anything to do.

My knowledge of such things is limited , but is there software that moderates and deletes out of line, off topic or bad language posts ?
I'm interested in this subject.

Thankyou for your time.

The Administrator is Wilbur. I think that it is perfectly understandable that posters whose threads and/or posts have had to be deleted, or posting privileges suspended should not be happy about that. As to why Wilbur is now doing all of his own moderating, I doubt that you will see or hear any authoritative account. I can say that I was glad to be of assistance, and also glad not to have to be making decisions as to where the "line" is, that requires action when crossed.

Something I noticed was some of the So Called Moderators argued with folks openly on the forums. The duty of a Moderator is to maintain order, not to create disorder. If a Moderator has something compelling to say in a public meeting, they must step down from their duties, name a deputy or replacement, say their piece and then decide if they want to resume as moderator. Sometimes the passion gets so high, they decide not to return as Moderator. In any case, the position is a solemn one and should be taken as such. NO creating discord with the Public when acting as moderator! Ya got sumpin to say, do it behind the scenes.

That's too bad the other mod's had to lose their status because of the one rotten egg. I wonder why Wilbur doesn't just "invite" him to leave? Seems better to punish the guilty than demote the innocent..........

I can't agree more Pete. Trouble is, we had a few who couldn't hold their tongue while under that responsibility, what's going to stop them now that the responsibility is gone!

Speaking for myself, I also agree with Boyd. I don't miss worrying about how far I should let a thread go before stepping in and upsetting someone.

harro, I think Wilbur keeps pretty quiet about security. He has a lot of tricks he's learned to use, and no use letting the casual troublemaker know about them.

Depends on your viewpoint.

One of the top 10 most popular blogs on the 'net (BoingBoing) maintains as primary moderator an extremely immoderate poster who is by turns insulting, condescending, insulting, arbitrary, insulting, condescending, and insulting. Did I mention he was insulting? He creates far more disorder than he seems to cure in the public discussions. To be fair, he's also insightful at finding what buttons to push to get people riled up and extremely smart, to boot. Thus, he's an excellent troll. Further, he has alluded to a great deal of his time being spent cleaning up behind-the-scenes stuff that the readers never see.

That site has apparently decided that controversy and snark attract page views. It seems to be working, since the site is a huge success by almost any measure.

I share your idea of what a moderator should be. I figure Wilbur does, too, based on the interaction I've had with him. Others, however, may feel differently.

Sounds like they should change his title from "moderator" to "instigator". :(

I doubt others on this site feel differently. Nobody comes here looking to be peed on. And if someone comes here looking to pee on others, he sure as hell shouldn't be a moderator. Our sport doesn't afford that kind of mentality much room, so why should the website that is our representation on the internet give them any more?

Within these posts is the answer to why I'm the last man standing. It was something one of the moderators posted that snapped me out of it. His words were something to the effect of "..I'm a moderator because Wilbur asked me". I realized at that moment what I had done to these gentlemen without any regard and they were getting beat up daily. Some days later I installed some background software that didn't play well with the moderator group and decided that would be a good time to make myself solely responsible.

That's it in a nutshell....

Edited to add:

The "Admin" guy is me except with extra permission. Sometimes I forget I'm logged in as Admin and make a few posts.

Imo, you have a completely wrong idea about what being a moderator is. It's a chore, a sometimes onerous chore. I would think that all the mods are more than happy to be relieved of this responsibility .

naw the person just above your post...

Ray, you're probably right. But mods still had powers that the rest of us didn't and now those powers are gone, so I used demotion in parentheses for lack of a better word.

Wilbur,
Thanks for your reply and explanation. While we're here, one thing I've always wondered about this site is what was your criteria or your choice process for picking moderators for your site? I'm simply curious.
