If your Borden stock is a Robertson make, it has a 1/2" flat. Mine likes to ride on the bag, not the ears so a gap of 1/2" works best.

goodgrouper mine also is a Robertson make with 1/2" flat ,infact it always sort of floats upwards.Which make/model bag are you using?
Thanks

I've had several rear bags but the current one is by far the best I've tried. It's a Protektor DR. bag.

Who physically makes a stock isn't terribly important. Far as I know, Jim has always *designed* his stocks, all the way back to when they were made by Lee Six in the late '90s.

I repeat: Ask Jim what he recommends. Aside from being in the Benchrest Hall of Fame, he's an IBS gold-level shooter, with a lot of score experience.

Since the question was about ear spread on a rear bag to fit the stock the OP has, it IS important to know which stock it is as earlier models may have been rounded or have narrower flats. I don't know if Jim's specified 1/2" flats on all his stocks from different manufacturers over the years, but all the BR stocks that Roberstons supplies to Jim and the very similar stock they sell to Stillers under the BRX model name have 1/2" flats. Who actually asked for the 1/2" flat is anyone's guess. I've looked into the history of this stock (because I own one) and would be interested in the details. Perhaps Roberston made a BR stock and then Jim and Jerry asked for slight changes to be made to it so it was different from the original.

Actually, I prefer a rather flexible bag with bunny ears or mid height ears and no flat. Bob Adamowicz designed that R&M pattern stock in the late 70's and I made a number of rifles on his pattern (which was made of Kevlar). Then when Bob became disinterested, I got his permission to produce them through Lee Six and we also produced a number here in this shop. We produced two variations here-one that was a direct copy of Bob's original design and one that Bob and I made slimmer in wrist and lower in height. Speedy and Kelbly both copied the stock from stock samples they had. A few years ago I sent a master to Robertson and paid for having a mold made as we found that we had too many "irons" in the fire here and we wanted to focus on manufacturing actions. All variants had basically a 1/2 inch wide flat on the toe. Both Bob and I preferred to have the toe make its own ledge in a softer bag that produced good tracking and control. I tried many flat notch bags and did not like any of them (all were well made) I just did not like the fit of the toe in the bag.

The Dave Dohrman little loose bag with ultra fabric ears was my favorite.

Protektor in Galeton Pa tells me that Jim Peightal is handling the Dave Dohrman style bags now..you can order directly through him by calling him at: 724-349-5216

Thanks for the info Jim.

Looks like there are many ways to skin the cat. I have tried running my stocks on the ears over the years and have always had vertical that way. But perhaps my ear material was too stiff to create a lasting "ledge".
When the DR bag came out a few years ago, I tried it and fell in love. It allows the stock to track like it's on a rail and the vertical went away. Also, the first record shot goes where the sighters say it should which was something that only happened 50% of the time before. I also love the ear heighth and how stable it is. For a knob tweaker like me, I like stability.

Here's a group I shot just this past weekend off this bag. Once I went to the record, I ran the group as fast as I could and never touched the elevation or windage knob again. I didn't time it, but I'll bet all five shots were downrange in under 8 or 9 seconds. Now that's tracking!

good --- group you had better not be coming to billings next weekend Jeff

Jim Borden,
I should probably know this already, but I don't. Are you a bag squeezer?
Boyd
For everyone else: At the beginning of any rear bag discussion it should probably be specified what shooting style the bag will be used for, since the requirements are so different. I would guess that Remy is shooting relatively free and not squeezing his rear bag.

I am not a bag squeezer--I shoot semi free recoil.

Nice looking group! Even got it in the middle so folks can't say "hey why did you miss the bullseye?"

As you say-more than 1 way to skin a cat
