Which action for a "custom" rifle?

Hi:

I am planning my next "custom" rifle and I need your input regarding Savage actions for this use.

Savage rifles/actions can be purchased for about $235.00 and up. Is there any reason not to choose a Savage action for the basis for a "custom" rifle? Are there some models that are more desired over the others?

In the past, I have used Remington and Mauser actions and prefer the Remington. I thought that I would try some other brand this time.

Any thoughts about the Savage action?

Thanks,

Zeke

Your definition of custom and mine differ...

Savage actions are production factory actions. Yes, the Target actions are somewhat better than many other factory actions.

They are not in the league of a true custom action, IE: Kelbly, Bat, Stiller, Pierce, Surgeon, etc.

Yea....their ugly as hell! ......and have heard the same comment being made by others.

But to each his own, as this is obviously a non-issue with many like yourself, or nobody would be buying it.

I had one built with a Savage duel port target action with the target accu-trigger in 6mm Norma BR. and am still amazed at how accurate it is. :):):):)

actions

I currently own and shoot 8 differant actions( some more than others). While a Savage ( if you get one the the scope mount wholes are straight) Remington or other production action can definately be made to shoot as good as a custom action the cost will be close by the time the action is trued and a good trigger is put on it, and yes the Savage target actions need to be trued.
Honestly I think you may want to look at the used equipement available (here especially). If you buy a rig with a used custom action you will probably happier in the long run and if it doesn't workout probably be able to get your money back out ( or close).
I have preferances in actions but others have had just as good a luck with actions I don't like. So look arround and go to some shoots if you can to see the rigs. Ask people you trust about what they like and why.

one vote

A vote for Stiller's precision actions. A company I am looking forward to doing business with for years to come. I am very happy with my predator action. Really good people to deal with.
