What's my Savage rifle worth?

Around ten years ago, I received a Savage 112 BVSS-S chambered in .223 Remington as a Christmas present from my uncle.

After putting approximately 10 rounds through it, he sent it off to Shilen where a new barrel was installed (not sure which model) and pillar bedded. The barrel is for .223 Ackley, and I'm not sure if Shilen did (or even does) the re-chambering.

The action was trued, I'm not sure who did the work, but knowing my uncle, it was probably someone very good.

The factory trigger was also replaced; first with a Canjar, and then with a different make, I don't know which. It looks like a regular trigger, and feels very nice.

A Leupold 12x scope is also mounted on the gun.

Anyway, with this information, I was wondering if you all could help me get an idea of what the gun is worth, as I'm strongly considering selling it. Since it was chambered for .223 Ackley (~10 years ago) and all of this work has been done on it, the rifle has sat unused in the gun safe. I'm assuming it could be a really nice shooter, but I have no interest in reloading and my uncle never gets around to it.

So rather than letting the gun collect dust, I would like to sell it and buy something I would actually shoot; I'm thinking of something like an Anschutz or maybe a HK 94 or one of the variants thereof.

I would appreciate any input regarding value, as well as where the best place to sell a rifle like this would be. I can probably get more specifics on the gunsmiths, etc., I'm just trying to put off a scene with a stubborn relative.

Thanks for any help!

You can shoot standard .223 Rem in it. Also, you'll never get what was put into it. wildcats and "improved" cartridge rifles never have a great resale. I'd keep it, form lots of brass from standard .223, and learn how to load.

To answer this question, I have to ask myself, "what would I pay for it".

Action - $350
Barrel - $200 (probably less)
Scope - $200 (of no value to me personally)

Total $750

To build the same rifle would cost
Action - $420
Barrel - $250
Stock - $100
Scope - $?
Trigger - $ Keep original
Gunsmith $150 (Zero for me)

I'm a Savage fan - I have way too many of them, including a 223AI (fantastic Round).

Funny - and I was going to suggest he decide what to sell it for and then give you a ring if he decided to sell it!!!

All suggestions are Good

All the above suggestions are good, but the best is - Learn how too reload, Since your uncle reloads, you should only need a set of dies. Then shoot it and have fun, mainly because you arent going to sell it for what was put into it , plus the cost of the rifle. 750 - 850 is about right

With it being a Savage, you can take the barrel off and replace it with a non-wildcat round like a standard .223 in a matter of minutes by yourself with no gunsmith required (beauty of the barrel nut) just set the headspace and your off and running. Sell the Shillen and use the money to buy a new barrel.

With a simple 5 minute change of the bolt head you can make it any caliber you want. If you choose a long action caliber you will have to load single shot but thats no big deal either.

Be aware that Savage rifles can get addicting and before you know it you might have barrels laying around just waiting for another action to screw onto.

PS. They can be had new without the scope in the $600-$650 range at some stores. I have one in a 22-250 that I paid $550 for new on sale 2 years ago.

Big Ted - I think you might be in dreamland...heck, I would pay $300 for it! I just KNOW I could sell it for more than that if I wanted to sell it...and I'm NOT talking about selling it to Adrian!

Have you discussed this with your Uncle? I would probably be a bit ticked at a nephew for selling a gift that I had put so much effort into for him.

FB, you said adrin has too many rifles now??? to many guns, to much money, to big of boobs, shooting to small of a group,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, none of this ever happens in real life!!!!

Keep it. Your uncle thought a lot of you to give it to you. If you don't want the rifle, give it back to your uncle. When I left home, my little brother was looking at my guns and asked him if he wanted a gun. He chose one and a year or so later I found out he sold it to another brother. I tried to buy that gun back for 40 years. I have given several guns since with the stipulation, If you don't want it later on for some reason, give it back. Kenny

You can't sell it. It was a gift from a close relative. You can only give it back. (those are the unwritten rules in our family). You uncle would probably rather get it back and provide you with an alternative rifle, than see you sell it.
