What kind of motor

What kind of motor would/should be used to make a case prep center?
I know its going to have to have a high torque low RPM. What would the other specs be or is there a name or type I should be looking for?
What would be the ideal RPM for this?

You might do a search on ebay for gear motors. I think I would be looking for something in the 150-250 rpm range. Don't know how much torque one would need. JMO

What isn't too bad

is a 1/2" drill motor with a speed control trigger. I have an old Craftsman and other than holding it fast to the bench, it is pretty good, never runs out of torque :). I realize it isn't fancy BUT ---------

This is well worth the money, not only for turning necks but you can make many usefull items and its much more versatile than just a gear motor.

I usually set it at about 100rpm and it works great for turning necks

What ever you do

Don't buy one of the Micro-Mini lathes. I bought one thinking I could do a lot of things but the spindle drive does not have enough torque to turn cases using a hand held turner the way I am accustomed to doing them. I suspect the little lathe in the link above would do just fine and be fun to have around.

Vern, you can go to the Grainger web site and type Right Angle Gear Motor in the Search function and many are available. Just pick what you want.

Thanks for all the good info guys, much appreciated.

I have considered the small lathe however the problem I have with that is....(story time)
I traded for a fair sized one one time, had a built in mill and weighed about 600 lbs.
Before I traded the guy who owned it was a BR shooter too and told me it was not accurate enough to turn brass.
Give him his due he was right.
I made a few expander buttons and things with it but could never turn brass with it.
So I am hesitant to think one of the little cheepie mini lathes would work. Also I see soooo many of those on ebay that are listed and do not work.

I am trying to keep the cost down also so I thought i would just find the motor and build my own.
