vertical wind

Let's talk about vertical wind. How many believe it exists? How many take it into consideration? How many have made indicators for it? What is the best design or your favorite design?

In Visalia

I believe it was Dennis Tinkham had something that looked like a dolphins tail, and it moved a lot, therefore in my humble opinion verticle air movement does exist, now, who makes verticle wind measuring devices? Like I need more stuff!!!!!!!

slow computor so

did not watch the link but the latest design pivots to catch the wind from all directions, and they work, was just dwon a few benches in tacoma last weekend and they are magical to behold,

now not needed at all ranges, namely very flat ones, but any berms they are magical

get on the list early rick backs up this time of year

Yeah, really. If this keeps up I'm gonna have to trade in the 1/2 ton to get a 3/4 ton truck! But then with gas heading up into the stratosphere again, I'll have a heavy truck loaded down with gear and parked in the driveway and nowhere to go!

Good advice. Did you, by chance, get to shoot off the uppy/downy? How did it react? Did it let the owner shoot better by his opinion?

Why talk about it ... when YOU CAN WATCH it here: http://www.brflags.com/flags.html#uppydowny. ;)

I am a little sceptical of the video.... sort of..... While it is true that a pure horozontal wind should not affect this sort of "flag"(the wind should flow equally on both the top and bottom), once a small amount of vertical wind does cause the flag to move it turns into a "wing". Once it has tilted either way (up or down) a pure strait line wind can keep it there, or move it even further due to "lift". You will have a high pressure side and a low pressure side. In a wing this would be called lift. I believe what the video showed was a small puff of vertical wind, but the horozontal wind created most of the wings movement, in my opinion. I am sure there is someone out there (aviation people) who can better explain the lift/ drag / crapola much better than me.

UNLESS, OF COURSE, I AM WRONG!!  :D Which only happens a fraction of the time................9/10!! :D

Anyone agree with my "assesment" of the video.

Graham Uppy/Downy flags

We shoot bermed ranges around here. These things come in very handy indicating both horizontal and vertical movements. I have used them on flat ranges and around baffles too. Did OK with them at the Cactus and last weekend in Tacoma.

In rain, they tend to get sluggish on the vertical axis, but dry off fairly quickly. So I guess one can say that like most flags, they can "lie". However, I highly recommend them. They are well thought out and built, like anything else Rick makes.

That's fantastic info Mustafa. Thanks.
I wish I would have looked around a bit more at the Cactus and seen your vertical indicator. I doubt you'd remember me but I met you down there on Friday I believe it was. I placed a book order with you.
I've got another couple questions for you; how many uppy/downy's do you use? And are your's the pivot type?

Btw, how's the book coming?

Those who believe that there is no up and down wind only need to come to the Luther range to view this on a regular basis. I would assume that when the surveyors tape tails on the flags stand straight up, there is indeed verticle wind.

Goodgrouper…

After the Sunday conditions at the Cactus (!!), Rick made some great changes to the u/d and yes, now we are using the 360's, the full pivot version. Usually placed in critical areas of the range and inside 100yds, where you can still see them easily. And usually using 1 or 2 (3 max.).

The book is being printed as we speak. I have attached the cover below. Patiently waiting like a pregnant elephant with a 22 month gestation period.

Sorry, I probably would remember you if I knew your full name but even that is not my strong suit. But you are on the list! Thanks for the order and your interest!

That’s funny mt…

The dog is Rick Graham’s and knowing firsthand how well Rick shoots, nobody would be surprised that he would own a very talented dog. Unlike most dogs that just create wind, this one actually sniffs the changing conditions.

Oh come now!!! :D That’s Rosie the Rat terrier and she thinks this Benchrest stuff is just silly. She’s much more interested in chasing squirrels. Now there’s a real sport!

Butch

I believe James Pappas made some of those years ago.
Butch

Yes Butch I did make a flag that showed vertical wind changes about 5 years ago. I still use them. I have modified them a couple of times, I think they work better now than when I first made them.

I was at Dietz this last weekend. Jerry H was there and he was having problem with vertical wind.
He told me about another guy who created flags that actually work on a second axis so it can spin around for horizontal and tilts up and down to indicate vertical. I dont know the name and dont think they were made for sale.
But there is the idea.
Jerry has a set of electronic flags that he made.
