Ugly/Unique Rails

Would it be this gun?

The blue rifle in the first photo was built by one of the Seymour, Texas shooters, either John Horn, Cliff Styles or Richard Futch. I'd say it was built by Cliff, but am not sure. John would know who built it. The rifle that's in the second photo, the black and gold underslung rifle is John Horn's and was built by him.

You are correct

You are correct, the black and gold rifle was built by John Horn. It is the rail that I am shooting right now. The blue gun and the red gun were built buy Cliff Styles(see attached photos). There was another rail that Cliff Styles and Richard Futch built that is by far one of the best looking rails in the world. I wish I had a picture of it to show. Maybe someone out there has a picture that they could share.

I thought I had a photo of Richard's rail gun. I looked and it's not on my web site. I'll have to see if I can find one of it. Every time I've seen it, it's had a 2" diameter barrel on it. I'm sure it's the one you are talking about. Sure would be a bear to put in a lathe. I should have a better photo of the black and gold underslung rail as well. The photo of it has been optimized for web sites too many times from a long time ago and has made it into a pretty poor photo.

I've just about quit taking photos of rails as they have developed to the point that it's either a Young, Dodd, or Hunter built rail anymore. You'll see a few Powell's and Hammonds as well as a few Bill Hall rail guns being shot. The interesting ones are the one offs where someone has come up with a better idea. Some of them work, some of them don't.

Cliff certainly loved building rail guns, maybe more than shooting them. It seems the older I get the less benchrest shooters there are that are still here. He was one of the driving forces behind unlimited shooting at Seymour.

Could I get some more pictures of the black and gold under slung rail? Can not see much detail in the pictures.

Rail Pic

This is the only other picture I have of it right now. I can take some pictures tonight if you would like.

Thanks for that gives a better shot from the under side. If you could take some more pictures that would be great. I am looking to the future for rail design. Youngs are great guns but are based on a 30 year old design.

Is this the Cliff rail your are talking about? Wish I could get some drawings of it.

That's the one that I mentioned. It looks like it no longer has a 2" diameter barrel on it. I think Richard was using Hart barrels and they quit making them that large.

You are right

That is the one. Richard has since gone back to a 2 inch barrel. One of these days he is going to run out of them.
