Two Different Camps

"It amazes a largely open range shooter like myself that there is so much being said about something that might result in such a minute return."

"Gene, I'm still absorbing your theory, but there seems to be a deal of correlation between what you claim & my experience."

John, you are not the first to suggest that tuners offer only a 'minute return.' I strongly disagree; I know the benefit is very significant and have found that keeping the rifle in tune is the biggest challenge of all for the short-range (100 & 200 yd., group shooters) even more so than reading wind and mirage.

Most experienced group shooters can read the wind, but often blame poor groups on missed conditions, when in fact, their rifle is not in tune. If a good shooter goes to the line with a block of cartridges that are what I call, 180 degrees out of tune, and he has no tuner with which to correct the situation, he is stuck with about a .375 group before firing a shot, even if he does everything else perfect!

I assure you, the benefits of a good tuner and knowing how to use it are very significant.

Settle this

Bill:
How much did the bore open up after you threaded the barrel? To me, threading is the same as removing metal from the extertior of the barrel. It's been noted several times on this board, that removing any metal period, will open up the bore and ruin accuracy. Let's settle this now.

Fred,I do not know,The barrel had 3 tenths of choke before t contoured it,I lapped the barrel after the contour & it still has 3 Tenths now & the lapp felt tighter at the muzzle,I did not measure it after the contour because i knew i would need to lapp anyway,I only removed .020 from the barrel OD,Enough to get it straight for threading,I thread 32 TPI. There's a language difference here

John, you are not the first to suggest that tuners offer only a 'minute return.'
Gene,

I was referring to the incremental differences (.005) quoted in other posts. As a percentage of a .250 agg, that's minute when compared with the orders of magnitude that I can rip out of the 1200 yard gun.

I wasn't criticising the concept, just musing on how success is measured in different disciplines.
