turning mandrels from rebar

...... in fact, in this case I've even got a relief cut into the mandrel such that I'm turning and trimming to length in one setup.

Well the relief cut idea was a total ballsup!! I went down to videotape the process for an upcoming episode of my 50BMG series and she din't go so veryvery well :) I couldn't efficiently get rid of the inner burr and pulling back off the mandrel became problematic so I turn't off the camera, rebuilt the setup and I'm trimming-to-length in a separate operation.
 
Ceramic works fine or grind if you have that availability and you don't need to use the crappy free machining steels which are to soft for any real use....

The "ceramic" you are talking about is better than carbon like diamond or cubical boron nitride coating ? Never heard neither read about monobloc ceramic cutting bits or even ceramic coating of tungsten carbide holser/support ...
