Turning down BR brass for a ppc bolt face

Fellas, i have a scoville BAT 13.5 pound rifle that is a shooting gun of a gun. I dont really think it matters what barrel i put on this thing, as this rifle just flat out shoots! You know we all talk about how special a rifle is when everything just works in sequince and this is one of those rifles. Anyway i am thinking about putting a 30BR barrel on this thing this fall, but the bolt is a ppc face. I know i can have the face opened up, but to be real honest i dont want to touch it. 30BR brass will last a long time so i am thinking about having the brass heads turned down to a ppc size bolt face. I know this has been touched on a time or two, but my question is, who is set up to do this properly? Any advise or sugestions? Thanks Lee

PS Sorry for any spelling errors the past few days. My lap top is in the shop and i am on my kids. I hate this unit!! LOL!! I cant live without spell check!!!!

This is a sample of turned bases. The first 2 are factory, the third is PPC size, and the last is 223 size.

This photo is of the lathe tool that I use. No, I don't want to do it for anybody.

Lee,

I haven't seen anyone advertise this as a service although i am sure that there are many people here equipped to do it. The hard part is probably finding someone to take the time to do it for you.

John,
It is real small. Remington used to sell brass without the flash hole. People used to play with flash hole size and they made brass available without the hole drilled. I have 2 cases of that BR brass.

I bought 3 boxes of that Remington 6 mm Br brass from Hart thru Al Mirdoch many years ago .
Hart had drilled the flash holes to .062 .

I ground the tool below. I do 6 steps:

1- turn .010 off the rim moving the carriage towards the chuck so the case is kept jammed in the Wilson Trimmer shellholder

2- repeat .010

3- turn .008 more off the rim.

4- plunge the extractor groove [ I don't remember the exact amount ]

5- File a nice bevel/radius on the rear edge of the rim to help the extractor click over

6- Barely touch the forward edge of the rim with the file to make sure there are no burrs left behind.

Once you do a few cases you will know the number on the dial you are working to for each step. Going from BR to PPC I don't worry about recutting the bevel that is in front of the extractor groove. I just plunge the new groove straight in. Note that on my lathe dial the actual metal removed in the first three steps would be 1/2 of the number I show. The number I show is the amount the diameter is reduced.

You measure the rim dia and extractor groove dia of a few PPC cases and duplicate these numbers on the BR case. I always find a few cases that have oversized rims and I wonder if this could cause flyers ....

Skeet,

Bruce Thom enlarged mine from PPC to BR and provided a new BR extractor for $75. Turn around time was very good.

I put the PPC extractor back on so I could shoot the last match of the year & it worked perfectly with PPC. Over the winter, I'll get the 30BR barrel on mine.

You can cut the rims if you want, but is your work worth more the $75 you're saving?

Regards, Ron

This post is pretty old but i now have a grooving tool tht will cut the web and the case head just perfect. I thought about having the bolt modified but when you have a gun that shoots so well, a guy hates to mess with it in any way. also the 30BR didnt work out so well on the scoville stock. Way to much felt recoil for me. My robertson BAT MB is a much better choice. thanks a bunch. Lee
