Tuners

Lynn,

It depends. Never said I would......if it had good ES. But.....if that load that was giving me one hole groups at 100 yards had 150 fs ES I wouldn't shoot it 1000 yards either. I would find a load with a very low es, tune it to shoot one hole groups at 100 yards with the tuner, and would be just fine at 1000 yards with that load/tune.

If you are going to shoot a load at 1000 with a poor ES, you will need to tune at 1000 yards, not 100.

You are confusing me and alinwa here.My extreme spreads have never been mentioned. When you give the tuners a try the best groups at 100 are seldom that good at 1000.They will however be very consistant at each distance and that is your tuning clue on how to dial them in.
Out here were it is always windy we shoot at night using a jeep at the target and a truck at the bench for lighting and it is easier to see your bullet holes in the dark. The light goes through the holes making them very easy to see if you place the jeep in the right spot. You can shoot 5 shot groups with your heavygun real quickly and just measure the target and make a change.

Lynn,

We have been doing the night thing here for years out to 1200 yards. I use a spotlight and a car battery set about 20 yards from the target and a bit off to the side due to heat mirage from the spot light. We don't use a Jeep at the target for two reasons. One is that a running motor creates WAY more heat mirage than a spotlight, and two, I don't think A JEEP would make it to my target. After all, it's not a Ford Bronco you know. :D

Where, exactly do you park so as to better help see your bullet holes....you have piqued my interest!!!

Here are my UNTESTED thoughts, based on a limmited IQ!!

1) If you have one hole groups at 100 with very low ES and no tuner, use the tuner to hold your notebook on your bench so the wind doesn't blow your pages...you certinly don't need it on your gun.

2) If you have very low ES and poor groups at 100 and you can use a tuner to get back to one hole groups, I believe that no further tuning would be nessasary at 1000.

3) If you have tuned to one hole groups at 100 with a tuner and krappy ES, and you are not going to find a load with lower ES, you will need to retune at whatever distance you plan on compeating.

These are my opinions NOT based on testing. Just kind of sitting around thinking about it. I do have a couple of tuners...they do work......but, If you bigtime tuner guys tell my " sorry Tod, but that is not how it works in the real world", then I accept that as fact and will not argue.

Todd,

I can tell you one thing he's right about that's a sure fact.

If you are going to park a vehicle where it could possibly get hit by a stray bullet, make it a jeep... No loss there...

We were using a portable battery powered lattern at first but to get the light to shine through the bullet holes we lost a couple lights. With a Jeep atleast when you shoot it you can still tow it home.

4mesh i thought we could use your Firebird, but i don't know how we would get it on the back bank. Matt
