Mayors in Det NY DC SF are already touting their local control over hand gun regs and possession. They can make it so much more difficult that no one can own a gun for whatever reason...They could require a psychiatric clearance, VD test, Medical evaluation, Opthalmological eval. Serum Vit A ( so you do not hava a risk for night blindness, DNA sample along with retina scans and fingerprints, background check that even Mother Theresa would fail...of course all of this at your expense tothe tune of too much of a hassle.
then it would be years more of litigation to prove the local municipalities are nto going along with the spirit/letter of the law and the constitution.
Practically impossible to get a gun permit in NYC except if you have clout like Don Imus, Howard Stern, or Ron Kuby

The people get the government they elect.
A large portion of the population must go along with the anti-gun sentiment, or they would not elect and re-elect such as Chicago, NYC, DC, San Francisco etc mayors. or anti-gun state governors. The four liberal Supreme Court justices in Heller were all nominated by an elected president and confirmed by an elected senate. Truth be known, the majority of the population probably just doesn't much care about gun rights, one way or the other.

I think you're probably right about the run-of-the-mill avg. joe-citizen regarding firearms. He probably doesn't think licensing and what we consider onorous restrictions and/or prohibition of certain types to be a problem.
But, what he doesn't realize is that the Second Amendment, as someone said, is "... the one that guarantees we can keep all the others." I suspect he would quickly change his tune if push-came-to-shove and there was anarchy. Some people are slow learners -- sometimes the mule just has to be hit between the eyes with a 2X4 to get his attention.
I just hope this country wakes up before it becomes the mule.
