The Cobra is sweet. It is about a Inch shorter than a vipor and with a drop port on the Cobra you do have to throw the shells a little more forward or the back of the shell will fall into the drop port.
Not a problem just takes a little adjusting.

Hi Glenn I am thinking about a drop port. With the Viper do you still have to push the shell forward or just insert and close the bolt? Don

Cobra Actions

Another benefit of the Cobra is that it's 2oz lighter and is a 1/2" shorter than its Viper/Panda cousins. Down side is try and get one your weight will be a long one unless you get lucky and find a used one.

Thanks for the reply's.

bglenn my question would be: sholud i just go with the viper as it may be easyer to operate?

333smitty im in the middle of of BR rifle build right now that should be done this time next year and im allready thinking of my next one so i dont mind waiting awhile,,just hard to come up with the free cash to make the order...but i will..Looking at them i was thinking the cobra looks to be the way to go with 10.5lb rifle, but if the viper would be the better choice,i would go that way, but im wanting to give that drop port a try.

is there any known problems with the viper or cobra action ?
i know like certain action you here talk of fireing pin troubles, extraction or ejection troubles. stuff that seems common that smith's or people have came up with fixes for.
thoes are the things i worry about when buying a action. because im not in the know, kind of in my own little world out here and i know noone who has one to check it out. so just searching for information...

thank you goodgrouper, yes its looking like the larger port opening on the viper would be more forgiveing(maybe faster)to operate in a hurry.
so im thinking more about the viper(drop port) now.

Thanks for the reply's.

Shinny Stillers actions are first rate . They work as advertized. When your favorite smith builds your rig he
will be surprised at how little he has to do to Square away the action.

Like I said there is no porblem with the Cobra, you just have to put a little forward motion on the shell to clear the drop port. With the Viper you still can't get careless and feed the case against the bolt head and the case may drop into the drop port hole. On the Vipor as long as you feed at the front of the opening there is no problem. After you shoot the Cobra a while the right motion is automatic. There are probly more stocks preinletted for the Viper.

Get the drop port period. I have two Vipers but only one is DP. I would love to have a Diamondback DP, but another rifle won't make me a better shooter. I do however love the big flat bottom of the Viper when bedding it.

Of the cobra & viper witch wood be best for lv & hv ? Thanks Max

I have a diamond back drop port and love it.
As far as the round falling into the drop port not a problem after your first practice session.
I love them.

Max if weight is a concern then the cobra is a tad lighter. Check Jerrys web site for weight considerations.

I E-mailed Russ at Stiller and ordered a Viper Stainless Steel with drop port for a 6-Dasher. He said they will do a run this summer so the wait may not be too long. Don

I thought the vipers were only available in aluminum.
Is this something new? Or have I just missed the boat again?

They have been around a few years. See the action in the middle of this photo: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2011/01/shot-show-report-stillers-new-rimfire-benchrest-action/

I think the reason you may be unaware of them is that I have never seen one on a short range bench gun due to the weight; although I guess (and I am guessing) you could make HV with one.

I know Kelbly and Stiller both have been in the business of building aluminium actions for years.

After 10-20 000 rounds do they still perform like when they where new?

Thanks for all the replys guys. well i did e-mail em and hey they e-mailed me right back and said they will run a batch of vipers this summer
and if i want one better tell them now and get on the list. so the wait may not be that long at all for a viper.
But with all the talk and looking at everything they build, im not so sure i dont want a diamondback with the drop port.
as i said im middle of building one right now, everything is paid for except(stock)will order it next month. So i was thinking once i have
the money put aside to make the order i will have to decide witch one i want. wish i could afford one of each but she said that aint happening. Its not so bad got one in the hopper and another new barrel for a dasher build..lol.. wish i could have em all but got to try and keep the peace..
