Starline brass- 6.5 Grendel

I've never used any Starline brass but I've read here and there some folks seem to think it's pretty good stuff in pistol cases. I recently noticed that they are making 6.5 Grendel brass and I'm considering giving it a try. When I bought my first batch of 6.5 Grendel Lapua wasn't available and so I've used Norma. Seems to be alright, but maybe a little soft. Since Starline has a good rep and the price is 1/2 what Lapua goes for it seems worthwhile to give it a try. So, has anyone else used Starline in rifle cases and if so, do you mind sharing the verdict?

Starline is about the only kind I have not tried...kinda gave up on anything less than Lapua. All others fell way short with Norma being just decent, comparatively. IME, Lapua is the cheapest route due to how well it holds up as well as just being very good brass in general, and having the small primer and flash holes, to boot.

If you try the starline, let me know how it goes but I'll be surprised if it holds up under your loads. ;)

At this point I haven't found any Lapua available which is one reason I thought to try some Starline. Will let you know how it works out.

Al, I'll have to confess that I haven't. When I considered the brass prep and fire forming for the Grinch, I folded under the pressure and went with 200 pieces of 6.5 Lapua. I have attempted to rehabilitate the Norma brass which involved a ring die, shaving the base with a handmade tool and tightening the primer pockets with another handmade tool. I shot a few and they seemed to hold up under a slightly lower powder charge. I have a match on Saturday that will tell the tale. Then before I tackle making all new stuff with lapua, I may still consider giving the Starline a try. If I do, I'll report back here.

"fixing cases" LOL...... better be careful there, that's how you get a graveyard


I had a guy over here the other day asked me "so what do you DO with all these failed experiments and tooling" I said "build another building to store it".... he looked around and said "ahhhhh, I see.... so you must experiment on other stuff than guns too!"

Yup, Alinwa's got a serious graveyard condition

Very good advice. I've already learned that over 3400 with an 80 gr is pushing the envelope on a hot day and surely don't intend to go through all that again with brass. Primers falling out when the bolt opens seems to indicate the load could be a bit warm. As I said, I have a quantity of lapua and will work with that at a lower velocity and will almost certainly order the Starline, especially sine Mr Turner suggests it's good stuff.
