Sporter Weight

Sporter weight

I don't know why Milt Cook chose 7.5 lbs. for sporter weight. While in the intervening years a lot of rifles have been built with this weight limit in mind there were a few problems also. I remember a competitor at one shoot that said his stock was painted wood and it turned out to be fiberglass. This kind of problem will always be present when people want to win without considering sportsmanship.
So should the weight limit be raised? I don't see why it should be a sacred cow, lets raise it and see what happens. If it doesn't work move it back to the original weight and listen to all of us howl when we have to cut off our favorite barrel on our sporter. While we are at it lets raise the 10.5 lb limit. After all a lot of Winchester 52's Anschutz 54's were ruined trying to make weight in those early years. :D
In all seriousness the weight limits are in place lets leave them alone because we now know how to work within the restrictions and its made for a competitive venue. I say lets keep it that way.

"Feeder" aspects

Plinkers, "factory", and otherwise non custom classes have shown interest in some areas but mostly at the club level. Plain truth of the matter is that these folks ain't gonna show up in the numbers envisioned.

We tried it!

A couple of years ago we had a "factory" and an "8.5#" class. Of some 18 thousand targets fired that year only 18 scores came in from those classes - 10 individuals, 6 of which were already competing with custom rifles.

Again, evidence exists in some instances (areas) that these classes are viable (and valuable) but in practice it doesn't pan out.
