Southern California Benchrest Shooting

Hey gang, I'm trying to find a place to shoot benchrest in Southern California. In live in San Bernardino County. I am new to benchrest, but used to shoot at the San Gabriel Valley Gun Club (SGVGC) in fish canyon (Duarte, CA) in the mid 1990s. Sadly, that range has been closed for three years now. I just recently found out that a benchrest club used to meet at the SGVGC -- the San Gabriel Valley Benchrest Shooters. Was that club disbanded when the range closed? If not, does it now meet in another location? Are there any other locations in Southern California where benchrest matches are conducted and a newbie can learn the sport? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

Hello

We used to run the San Gabriel Benchrest matches before fish canyon closed. Angeles shooting range, http://www.angelesranges.com/ , is currently building us a 100 yard dedicated benchrest line. They have the grading permits and hope to be able to open for matches sometime early to mid 2010. We will keep everyone posted as it gets closer.

100 yard only?

Hello Lawrence,

I thought it was going to be 100 & 200 yards.....

What happened?

Thanks,

Rod.....

Thanks for your response. With the SGVGC closed, where have the San Gabriel shooters been shooting for the past several years? Even though the bencrest area at the Angeles Range is not complete yet, do you and other benchrest shooters shoot at the part of the range that is currently open? I would like to start learning how to shoot benchrest as soon as possible. Any recommendations for getting started?

1st thing. What is your name?

I heard that some of the guys are getting together on either Tuesdays or Wednesdays at Angeles and some of the others are getting together at Redlands. Perhaps someone can jump in and give some days and times?

Shooting in Southern CA

As Lawrence mentioned, the places to practice in the region is the Angeles range and Lytle Creek. The Inland range at Redlands is closed for the present time.It is true that a few guys get together on Wednesday at the Angeles range. If you are interested in Angeles, the range is open at 7 am for setup and the shooting starts at 9am.

Whats the next closest range for 200yds now for the former San Gabriel club-Visailia or up north? That's too bad that you weren't able to get 200 out of your new range.

You can practice on BLM land, out in the desert. I found that the switchy breezes, mirage, & howling winds, gave me an excellent place to learn to read conditions. Another advantage is that you won't have to worry about gas guns pitching brass at your expensive stock paint jobs.....

I shoot in a dead end canyon in the Mojave desert, I don't have to be concerned that someone will pass in front of the line of fire, or some idiot sweeping the line with his gun, trying to clear a jam.....

I have gotten real quality practice time in, developing loads, tuning, & loading, without distractions.....

It's a bit of a ways to go, to shoot, but I feel it's well worth the effort.....

This time of year, until March, the weather is pleasant, the desert is quiet & offers solitude, so you can concentrate.....

A bit far for Angelenos, but since you mentioned the desert

There is a range in Inyokern, about 42 miles north of Mojave near the junction of the 14 and 395 hwys. It goes out to 600 yards with berms at all the intermediate distances. We are in the process of putting in 6 target stands for NRA matches and we would really like to see some other benchrest shooters there. We have 6 concrete benches. Usually we have the place to ourselves. It requires a 50 dollar yearly fee and then is free to shoot every day. I would gladly sponsor any benchrest shooter that wanted to come up so he could shoot the day for 5 dollars as a guest. We practice both short range and long range benchrest there most every day. Sort of nice to have a huge area to yourself but we wouldn't mind some company once in a while. We are hoping to get some matches going in the near future. Since the range sits right below Walker pass you will learn to shoot wind well. The 50 dollar yearly fee can be paid at guns4us in Ridgecrest (about 10 miles from the range).

We drive to Sacramento to shoot. Great guys and good competition. They start the season in April and shoot the first weekend of every month till Nov.
Traveling is a must in competitive benchrest, part of the fun and adventure.
Hope to see you soon. Visalia and Pheonix will be your closest venues, for the time being. LA will be up and running soon.:)

guns4us (760) 375-1004 would be the contact for membership. The folks there don't know much about BR but can give you a yearly membership. You would need to get it in person. I would be the contact if you want to come as a guest. You can reach me at 760-377-4877 or geoffrey.c.campbell@gmail.com. The website is http://www.rgra.org/ but is not up to date. For example it says it is closed during the week for construction which was a month ago. There will be a brief closure while we erect the NRA target stands on the concrete wall that is already poured. Not BR related. Also, they don't show the concrete benches in the photo.

I'll also be the contact as we try and develop short and long range BR and F-class shoots.

Thanks Geoff

Might see you at the Range. Also looking for open shooting areas in Inyo Kern. San Bernardino County is virtually closed to CF except during hunting seasons. I was in Trona a couple weeks ago working. I miss my childhood in Lucerne Valley when there was open Shooting.

I thought you were the guy in charge of the southern california benchrest shooters? I also thought I read were you were the guy getting the angeles range set-up a couple years ago? Did you quit? What happened?

Nothing has changed at Angeles BR. I still am the person who makes the decisions on Angeles BR. But if our program isn't operational not allot can be done. Nobody has quit. The final permits are being issued and construction is on the horizon.

I have as good group that I consult with. Some of them have reported on the Angeles BR progress on BRC. We hope to start next Summer with a Angeles BR program as good or better than we had at San Gabriel.
