Shipping Rifles

When an individual ships an action (action already registered in the shipping indiividuals name) to a gunsmith for a custom build, can the gunsmith performing the work ship the completed rifle directly back to the individual or does it have to be shipped to an FFL holder???
Thanks for your time, Floyd

Is'nt that why we are required to fill out forms when we purchase a firearm from a dealer or have it sent to a FFL holder or when purchased and shipped from out of state?

Ian, what we have in the US(NOT the USA).........

is De Facto registration, in that our socialist government OWNs everything, and we are "customers", "taxpayers", and "residents". This is why we have to pay property "taxes", which is actually rent to the government, and we are paying for the "priviledge" of living on "their" land and paying for its upkeep. This is why we have to "apply"(ask for permission) for a "permit"(get permission) to build an addition, or put up a fence, etc., so a gov't drone comes out, takes measurements, etc., then scurries back to "Taxman Central", so notations can be duly made in preparation for an increase in our, "Priviledge to live in your house, M'Lord, tax" next year. And, filling out a Permit to Purchase when buying a firearm is just another manifestation of our paternalistic form of socialism, the same as we led the Indians to believe was good for them when the "Great White Father" was going to take care of EVERYthing, like their land, oil, grazing rights, etc. Now we, too, have to believe in the "great father" in washington. When the USA was actually a republic, before lincoln was elected , the citizens didn't want to pay property or income taxes(capita, or "head" taxes) so when the Constitution was written it specifically forbade these "taxes", and of course in a Republic, only the property owners can vote, so they didn't want to set things up that would turn them into eventual paupers. An interesting development recently, was the "Made in Montana" law passed in Montana; where firearms made there, to stay there, are not registered federally when made, and are stamped this way. It will be interesting to see how the federales react to this slap in their faces with feces. They should appreciate greatly the taste of $**t pie, after all, we've been tolerating it for 148 years.;)

Mike,
Does the FFL holder have to ship it back by overnight delivery or can it be by ground delivery to the registered owner? And by which Courier?
Thanks, Floyd

i hope it goes through , being as im a machinist living in montana

Your Gunsmith can ship your rifle directly back to you ground shipping by UPS, FEDEX, or US Mail, and maybe others. I have done work for some Texas customers and if they shipped the action directly to me, I shipped it directly back to them. I can't speak for every state, but for Texas and NC it is no problem.

If you have any concerns, just call your gunsmith and discuss it with him before you ship your rifle.

Floyd, I think it is different for handguns, but long guns can be shipped by ground. Handguns can as well, through USPS if between two FFL's. Check the ATF website to be sure. I don't do much handgun work and it's not been an issue for me. Long guns may be shipped from a non-licensee owner to a licensed gunsmith or manufacturer, for repair, and directly back to the owner without going through another FFL, by ground.---Mike

The man asked for a simple answer not a broadcast from Ruby Ridge. Calm down there Prancing Horse.

Recently

A new shooter at our club baught a benchrest rifle from another shooter in another state. The person went to the Post Office to ship the rifle and was asked if the recipient was an FFL or an "Individual"? The shipper responded an individual. The PO person called the State Police. The rifle was impounded and a mess ensued.

I have shipped a goodly number of weapons via USPS and never been asked anything about guns. Is this something new? I think the shipper mentioned had to pay a few bucks to clear this up!

Pete,

State to state from FFL to FFL only. The recipients have to clear the rifle at the other end, as if they were buying it. The FFL's usually charge $25-$50 for their paperwork/time.

From state to state, can be shipped from individual to FFL. The purpose of all of this is to make sure the recipient goes through what ever back ground check is required in the state the recipient lives.
I have found that the USPS is far easier to deal with that UPS or FEDEX.
Don't even try the UPS store, you have to go one of their Shipping centers.

Gunbroker.Com has a very good tutorial.

Try to get an out of state FFL holder to fax you a copy of their FFL, when you do not have one. It's always "you show me yours...and I'll show you mine"

Although not required, i like to have a copy of the recipients FFL, so I know I'm not committing a federal crime.

Let me tell you something, Tim.........

the man in question, asked a question, to which I provided a reply. I provided that answer so that I was able to "flesh out" the dishonesty, duplicity, and illusory nature of our "system" and how corrupt it has become as a result of the machinations of the misshapen ones in goverment; I wished to leave no doubt as to the way things ARE! It may be gentlemanly to not speak out while suffering in silence, I still consider myself a gentleman, in that I try to maintain a modicum of decorum, until I step on a third rail. Since you decided to make it a personal thing, I believe a simple statement is called for. I did not desire, request, or appreciate your supercilious tone in your direct entry. Jerry is correct, more people need to STAND UP and speak the truth, even if it isn't PC! And, I happen to feel it is my duty to let folks understand without a strident delivery, merely a definitive one. Were I not to do this, I would be a toady, and, a liar!! And you can take that which ever way you care to, it is only my way.
