Scope advice

Hello everybody. Total newbie questions I am afraid. I was hoping to get some advice from some of the more experienced forum users. I'll have to admit that I know very little about rifles or firearms in general, which is why I thought it would be a good idea to join this forum to see if I can find the info I require. I need to research a Christmas gift for my brother (who is a firearms enthusiast and benchrest rifle owner) but I wouldn't have a clue where to start. After discussion with my sister-in-law I have settled on a new scope for his competition shoots. I have been looking around for new and used rifl scopes for sale but I don't really know the best places to look. There are plenty to choose from on Amazon but I understand that it is hardly a specialist distributor. Can anybody recommend a reputable online retailer and possibly some potential scopes that would be suitable for competition purposes? Apologies for my complete ignorance of the subject. Thank you in advance to anybody who can offer any help at all. There is one site I've come across today which has thrown up a few results for scopes: http://www.used.forsale/rifle-scopes but nothing really suitable for what I'm after unfortunately.

SWFA if you don't want a Nightforce. D&B Supply or Bruno's if you do

What's your budget?

Puhleeeeze....."never apologize for ignorance mate!!" :)

seriously...

We all do what we do, f'rinstance I know very little about the cultivation of endives but who knows......maybe someday the passion will hit me. KUDOS from me for taking the time to research your purchase. I'd be proud to have you as a bro-in-law.

Optics Planet is another source but if you could find out just a WEE bit more info???

"His competition shoots".......any chance sis-in-law could maybe look at a score card or range report or calendar schedule? See what kind of competition?

Do you know if your brother likes fine crosshairs or dots for his scopes? You say he owns a benchrest rifle. If you want to stay under $500 for a scope you can get him a leupold or a weaver 36, but if money is not an object you can get him a march or a nightforce scope which can run you over $2000. Benchrest shooters can be picky about what type of equipment goes on ther guns. You can also try and find out what power of scope he likes, some shooters like nothing less than 50 power and some like 36 power. Get him a march fixed 50 power or a Nightforce benchrest 42 power, if he doesn't like it,give it to me I'll take it

Scoppy,

You stated: "(who is a firearms enthusiast and benchrest rifle owner)" THEREFORE PLEASE give your brother a gift certificate, so he can buy what he really wants/needs.

Your brother will love you for it!

I would choose a gift certificate from SWFA.

or optics planet....
( i have already received one gift this year that is in the realm of motorcycles,
but not in my world of motorcycles.)

I agree....give him a gift certificate or simply cash and let him pick the scope he wants. You can't guess which one and any you buy would be wrong.

If an experienced match shooter chooses a scope for his best friend, also a competition shooter, the gift is likely to be a disappointment in one way or another. There are just too many variables and what one guy loves, the next guy will find absolutely unacceptable. You not only have to select the correct brand, but also the zoom range and other options. Then there are the reticles, where things get really complicated with everyone having a strong opinion and those opinions vary a lot.

If YOU, who admits to knowing little about match shooting, select a scope you are guaranteed to make the wrong choice. DO NOT buy a scope. Get a gift certificate.

True, they aren't very exciting to open on Christmas morning, but buying the wrong scope will be much worse. Optics Planet is one place to look.
