Ruger No. 1 extraction

Shooting a recently acquired used Ruger #1, I'm disappointed by its indifferent extraction. Using mild 30-06 handloads with 30-30 power levels, the exractor will often fail to remove a fired case until the lever is operated three or four times. The operation is equally poor with the ejector spring unit installed for ejection or removed for extraction only. The extractor does not appear to be damaged, but it often slips away from the cartridge rim instead of extracting. This is my first Number 1. Is this a common problem? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

I had a similar problem several years ago. It turned out to be a belted Magnum extractor instead of the 30-06 rimless type in the original factory installation. Ruger sent me a proper replacement....end of problem.

Take the forend off and there will be a spring loaded extractor strut on the left side. Put a clockwise turn or two with a hex wrench to increase the extractor pressure.

the extractor of your #1 ruger has a spring & plunger located on the back-side which makes contact with the interior wll of the action, this allows the extractor to flex out over the rim & then back behind the rim for proper extraction. In the previous reply about the spring adjustment located under under the forearm is also correct but if you find that after adjusting the tension does not help, the problem is most likely the absense of the spring & plunger located on the extractor itself . I hope this info helps out. P.S. when you operate the lever on a #1 ruger & you don't hear the extractor go click ???? It's usally the tension spring under the forearm --------- take care Craig
