I suspect there must be an optimum tennon length to support a free floating barrel. Will someone be willing to share that ? Thanks, Pete
I was a fly on the wall when Bruce Thom, Alan Hall & his son, and Jim Carmichael were talking at one of the 1,000 yard Nationals (1998?). This question came up, & Bruce was asked why he made the tenon so long on the 2" diameter BAT, which has a 1.250 diameter tenon. He said "I didn't do it for strength, I did it for alignment." Perhaps overkill, but he had a reason for it.I've also heard that the first few threads on a barrel thread closest to the shoulder provide most of the strength for the thread and that the rest are more or less along for the ride.
