I doubt there is much difference in any of the three.

If you are thinking of rebarreling a Rifle and making a custom, I would figure there are a lot more important perameters to consider than the threads ability to support a barrel...........jackie
 
Speaking of thread length

I suspect there must be an optimum tennon length to support a free floating barrel. Will someone be willing to share that ? Thanks, Pete
 
Pete, I don't know how you would determine that in actual testing. I am sure there are lots of theories. The truth is (I believe) all of the actions will hang a barrel...
 
Many years agoI had this discussion with Dan Lilja, He told me the story abot when you can get to much barrel dia and weight and what it did to his set up.:confused:

The common rule of thumb that I've always heard was that the thread was at it's strongest when it's as long as it's diameter. A 1 1/16" thread would be 1 1/16" long. I've also heard that the first few threads on a barrel thread closest to the shoulder provide most of the strength for the thread and that the rest are more or less along for the ride.

I was a fly on the wall when Bruce Thom, Alan Hall & his son, and Jim Carmichael were talking at one of the 1,000 yard Nationals (1998?). This question came up, & Bruce was asked why he made the tenon so long on the 2" diameter BAT, which has a 1.250 diameter tenon. He said "I didn't do it for strength, I did it for alignment." Perhaps overkill, but he had a reason for it.

Thread length

Remingtons and several Custom actions have thread tenons that are less than 3/4 inches long, and shooters have been hanging big ole barrels off of them for years with no ill affects.

Just a few years ago, a long range shooter set a World Record with a Rem 721 that had a 30 inch long straight 1 1/4 barrel attached.

Perhaps the originol poster will tell us what concerns him.........jackie
 
No concern, curiosity perhaps. The analogy would be, holding the very end of the golf club vs full grip with two hands. I see some manufacturers going with longer tenons, longer than a rem700 for comparison. Not sure if it really matters. I appreciate your replies! Thank you all!
