Question on bolt face sizes

Hello, First time caller, long time listener :)

I am in the planning stages of building up a tactical type rifle, planning on building from a Remington 700 action, chambered in 308 win, and if timing the bolt isn't going to be a big issue (thats for another post!) I want to use a PTG oversize bolt. Which brings me to the question of bolt face's.

Obviously I will need a .308 bolt face for my project, but for the sake of learning, I was wondering exactly what bolt faces there are, as far as I'm aware remington makes a .223, .308, and a magnum size. Is there any others? I have heard of PPC boltfaces for savages, what exactly is this? And is there a chart somewhere that shows what cartridges use what boltface?

Though I have been shooting rimfire for years I just got into centerfire recently , now that i'm out of college and have a little extra money to spend on new toys :)

you have it pretty figured out. the PPC is inbetween a .223 and .308 bolt face and is custom cut on a remington. the only cartridges that use it are the 7.62x39 and the .220 russian variants (ppc). there are also 2 lengths of bolts to throw in the mix on the .308 and magnum size both. if you have a reloading guide that shows the blueprints you can figure out what size boltfaces go with what cartridges or order a book of reamer prints.

Thanks for the info!

Would there be any advantage of getting the .308 bolt face in a long action? I don't plan on re barreling to any other caliber.

the only reason to get a .308 bolt face in a long action is to use long action calibers- 25-06, 270, 280, 30-06 and the like. other than that I see no other reason. I guess I don't understand your question.

Oh ok I understand.

I have heard of people with savage actions buying a long action .308 face when they where inteding to shoot 308 Win. , but now that I think of it, it was so they could swap out there barrel and shoot a 30-06 or other cartridge.

Wasn't sure if that was the only reason doing it that way, but if so I won't be swapping out any other calibers.

Stupid question :)

Not a dumb question, if you want to use heavy bullets and set them long they will not work through a short action. As long as you are target shooting and single loading there is no problem but if you want to use the magazine you have problems with heavy bullets and long seating. The maximum OAL
is 2.800 in the magazine of a Remington short action I believe.

Ooooh ok that makes sense, I never thought about it that way.
