Out of curiosity, does any body know what Dave's 12" x 1/2" truing mandrel is made of and the tolerances?? Hardness??

I know I can give Kiff a call but was wondering if anybody else already knew.

12" x .5 mandrel

It is made of tool steel and precision ground. Straight enought to true up your tail stock(test bar).

With the correct bushings good enought to align any action in a truing jig. The difference in Kiffs product and Mansons product. Kiff recomends different sized bushing and Manson uses just two tapered bushings. If you are going to follow Kiffs thoughts you will need several bushings ($35.00 each). I have two of each of the following ODs. .6990, .6995, .7000,
.7005, .7010, .7015, .7020, .7025, .7030, .70335, and .7040. You can use the same bushings in the piloted thread chasing tap, the pioted lug abuttment cutter, and the bolt race reamers. All of these toold are quite expensive. Kiff offers the piloterd tooling for Remingtons (1.0625 x 16tpi), Winchesters (1.00 X 16tpi), Savages 1.0625 0r 1.1250 x(20tpi) custom BR actions 1.0625 (18 tpi)
He offers them in standard, +.010, and +.020.

I have all the bushings, taps, cutters and etc..from Kiff. I prefer to single pointing everything over the other way.

I was just wondering on the specs of the mandrel, is it basically just a piece of drill rod turned, ground and polished to tighter than normal spec +.000/-.001 per foot? What type of tool steel, A2, A6, D2, H13, O1, S7, W1 ??
