OK all you'se HSS hand-grinding goofballs.....

What really works well, is................

a grinder with a built-in speed control, you can turn it down 'til it doesn't generate sparks when you touch it with scrap. It takes a little longer, but does a better job, smoother, too.....
You could also use a mill, like a Bridgeport w/dial-a-speed on it, that would be fantastic if you got one; otherwise, maybe an electrician could help. :D

I made a fixture to hold the 60 degree angle and the clearance angle. All I have to do is run the fixture back & forth along the guide.

Thread tool jig

Try this jig for grinding HSS threading tools. I got the drawing from Speedy. I use it with a surface grinder, but it could be adapted for other methods.

Probably better than grinding on a lathe. The ways are usally covered and the spindle is above everything. If worried, you can easly cover bed and ways with paper, cardboard, etc. For grinding a tool bit there is very little movement to expose anything.
