I picked up a like new Sako A1 single shot rifle with the factory 22 PPC barrel. I've got quite a few Lapua 220R cases and it's no biggie to f-form those either, but was wondering about using the Norma 22 PPC brass for it.

Feedback on the Norma 22 PPC cases appreciated.

I would think it would be perfect for your newly acquired rifle, as the Norma Brass is designed to shoot in a SAAMI spec chamber.

I've the same rifle, and set it up to shoot the 40VMax too fast, with a Leo 6.5-20xAO......at pd's. Worked pretty well!

I think I used Lapua, Sako, and Norma cases.

My stuff is packed away these days......but I agree with Jackie about the chamber.

A fellow who I used shoot with used the Norma 22PPC brass exclusively in his Sako and he was very happy with the brass.

A few years ago I used to have a Ruger VT in 22PPC and brass life with the Norma brass was at least 8 firings and still in good shape. I sold the rifle at that point so I'm not sure how many firings one could get. JME

Even though it's not a real BR rig, I've lusted after one of these Sako single shots in 22 PPC since the early '90's when in a fit of supreme cluelessness, I passed on one in Stan Ware's shop that the owner wanted to sell. A true Forrest Gump moment. (stupid is as stupid does) :eek:

Smart move, buddy. Ranks right up there with buying all that Fruit of The Loom stock when it was in recievership. :rolleyes:

So this past weekend, I headed to the big Dakota Territory gun show here, hoping to find another on the 'lust list'...a Browning B78 heavy round barrel in 22-250. The only B78 on the property was a beautiful heavy round barrel chambered in 7 Mag. Pass on that. My shoulder will thank me later.

And there, as I walked out, was this Sako...just sitting there. Honest to God, I think there was a plume of light shining down from above on it's satin, oil finished finished stock and little shafts of light coming out of the two trigger adjustment holes in the trigger guard! :D

that rig should be the cats behind for fox and coyotes. I have a Sako 6ppc vixen single shot HB rifle that is wonderfully accurate and have used both Norma and Sako brass in it with nary a whimper and with great brass life. Good luck with yours.
 
Grabbed 50 Norma 22 PPC cases, a Redding full length bushing die, a Wilson seater (oversize) for the PPC USA cases and Mike Lucas is making a rod guide. Randy Robinett took pity and/or interest :D in the project and is making some bullets to better work with the 14 twist barrel. :cool:

Took the bolt apart to make sure it was clean and not all sludged up with goo. It appears to be either unfired or fired very, very little. With a pin gauge, the chamber neck measures a tight .252, a loaded round with a boat tailed Nosler BTip goes .2462. Dumping 26.0 of H322 for test firing a couple cases shows a fired neck size of .2515 so that confirms my pin gauge measurement. With the fired cases, the Redding die set up nicely, sized both the base and shoulder/body junction well and with .001 of shoulder push back, the stripped bolt just drops on a sized case.

How the brass and dies fit this factory chamber is actually pretty impressive. :)

Next step is dealing with the scope rings. It has a set of genuine Sako high rings on it, now. I'll certainly have a variety of scopes on the gun and those rings have flat blade screws on the ring tops that are evidently fairly easy to bugger up even with a correct fitting driver blade. They are nice rings with a little recoil stop built in. I'll try to find some M3.5 X 0.6 X 6MM socket head screws to replace the original ring screws.

Nice find, on the Wilson 22PPC-USA die......as the Sako cases have the largest web diameter.

Update

Took advantage of some rare down time to work on the little Sako. Set up the f.l. Redding bushing die and it proved to be a perfect match for the factory chamber. With just .001 of shoulder push back on some cases I'd fired previously, the stripped bolt closed effortlessly and the base and shoulder sized nicely. The Wilson seater is also spot on.

Randy Robinett took an interest in the project and yesterdays USPS brought a nice package of his flat based bullets, including some of his B.I.B. 'Swifty' series .22's. :cool:

Established and recorded the seating stem length for the BIB's and a half dozen other bullets, as well. A set of Leupold mounts and a really good Nikon Monarch 6.5-20 with a fine cross hair round out the topside. I'm a big fan of good, classic looking scopes on this type of gun and the Nikon is a great match. Mike Lucas made up another of his great rod guides for the Dewey rod. Will start with N130, N133, Benchmark and H322.

The bedding needs a tune up before heading to the range and that will get done next week. From there, it's a matter of Mother Nature getting some warm weather here.

Curiosity is killin' me, Al - what are the bullets in the white "cup"?:confused: It's an interesting, somewhat of a "throw-back" project . . . hope it proves out. :cool: Found some left-over cores for the 35Gr. I made for 'RO' way back when . . . but, that was for a 22Ack. Imp. Hornet. U just caught me needing a break from the routine . . .;) RG

Randy, those are Nosler 40 gt. BTips. A couple years ago, I bought two matching Savage 112J single shots, one in 22-250 and the other a 220 Swift. Along with the deal came several hundred new cases and almost 3,000 of the Nosler 40 gr BTips. The previous owner lived close to Nosler and bought them "...right off the assembly line", as he put it. :cool:

And I couldn't stand it any longer....did the bedding this afternoon! ;) -Al
 
How long are the 40 Gr. Ballistic Tip?:confused: Joe had a 1990 vintage Rem. 700, 22/250, 1:14" twist, which shot them very well on PD shoot a couple years back. RG

They're .695 long including the .050 boat tail. The flat based Nosler 40 gr. plastic tipped bullets are .665 long and there's a few hundred of those here, also. My 22BR loves the 40 gr. BTips, :) -Al

ALL i have the same gun i have only shot it two times i used vv 133 with the 52 gr Berger Al what size bushing do you have for the Redding die
