I recently had hunter gun built by James Messer out of NC . The gun is a 308win 336neck 1/14 Hart barrel rem action MCmillan stock jewell triger. I have tried to shoot 168mk and accuracey terrible only combo I found that gave decent results is 135mk and 50.5 gr 4831sc wouldnt have tried this powder but had some I use for a 284. Gun shoots 3/4 -1/2 average 5 shots at 100yds but I feel it should be be tighter was going to try 175mk but hart advised against them saying too heavy any one on here willing to share there loads w me . I tried varget ,h4895 ,a2460, h380 no luck w same bullets. Have good rest and been shooting in good cond. Also Im in elpaso, tx currently Im from Ky what diff should I notice w loading here temp hotter but no humidity.
Thinks,Army guy w non shooting gun

Haven't shot Hunter BR in many a moon, but your rifle is kinda old technology...Why did you go with a full .308 with a 14 twist.??..Most HBR rifle are based on wildcat short versions with slow twist barrels 15-17 twist, that will shoot light custom bullets very well...I would recommend using Lapua brass and either H380 or H4895 or Varget with your Sierra 168 MKs loaded to about 2600 fps...If you are that new to HBR it is possible that you need more time learning to read your windflags to get the most out of your rifle...

Good luck...;)

Thanks for the help

I tried both those powders and bullet combos and was getting consistant fliers it could be me but I dont have the problem w my hevy gun. I went with 308 dt dies and things I already had from previous 308and wanted to be able to use it for deer hunting as well I know its hard tooget a do all gun but my other is a 17lb 1000yd light gun and hevy to hump around the woods you think there is a chance the 118s would shoot with the twist i have or the 125 nosler

oooooo yea..

the lil bullets will do just fine ,,,110-118 gr are perfect for your gun...try 4895 ....that is prolly the best powder that you mentioned with what ur doin......168 shuld work with 4895 too....Roger
PS....there is nothing wrong with the accuracy of the 150-168 class bullets....it is just...""they kik the daylights out of UU" ....remember this is a 10 lb gun....and the torque is less with the smaller bullets....there is a reason that the winners are using the small bullets....that cut a big hole!!!

My Frist HBR

My 1st Hunter gun was set up about the same, full length 308 332nk. memory serves me correct, I used 150 chism and 135 bergers with vv-135 and maybe some H4895 That full 308 with those 150s and no muzz brake put a can of whip a_ _ on a guys shoulder, after all day at the match.

Try this

Just like expiper said, go ahead and get some custom bullets in the 118-125gr range. You can even get started with some Speer 125gr. TNT bullets. Push these bullets between 3000 to 3100 fps. Some of the powders I would try are N135, N140, IMR4320, Varget, H4895SC, and RL15. The 4320 is a commonly overlooked powder. It is small grain like Vit. powders. I used to shoot this powder in BR with much success. Just look for good density at the velocity you want to shoot. I would also recommend jamming the bullets into the lands. When you shoot this barrel out, definetly choose a case with as close to 30-30 capacity as you can, and install something like a 18" twist Krieger or Barlien barrel.

I shoot hunter class with something very close to that combo. My barrel is a 1/15 though. 168's may be a little heavy for that twist. I'd try Berger 150's or 135's. I'm shooting 135's with a VERY mild load of BL-(c)2. You don't see that powder much in BR these days(ball powders are usually more temperature sensitive), but it's won me a 100yd match or two at the club where I shoot. It's also probably a little fast for the bullet I'm pushing down the tube....oh well. Try some Berger bullets and N-135. Don't go over 150gr.

thanks for all the help

I just ordered 300 of the 135 sierras and will try some of the other powders and stuff you guys have mentioned may seat bullets in lands also with 50.5 grs of 4831 in there there aint room to put the bullets too far in case anyhow

Don't count on the Sierra bullets to give you the accuracy you are looking for...The better choice will be the Berger flat base match bullets in 135-150 grain weight...

Nothing wrong with a FL 308. I use a 308 Obermeyer w/ 0.333" nk. Anyway, you need to get some quality BR bullets. BIB, Berger etc. I use the 134 10 ogive BIB in a 15 twist Lilja. As for powders: N135, N140, 748 are the top performers. I have even used H322 and Benchmark. With the 1-14 twist 125-150 grainer will be your best bet.

One of the 2 best

HBR rifles I have owned was a BAT with a 308 barrel on it. I shot 118 BIB 7 ogive bullets in it exclusively and it was a one hole deal from the first shot the barrel shot through it. The rifle is still competative . I used N-140 powder and Federal large primers.

There is nothing wrong with a full 308 except the waste of the extra powder one has to put in them to make them shoot the same as a minimum case HBR rifle. My current favorite is a 30-284-1.650. It shoots every bit as well as the 308 did. I am shooting 38g of powder in it to make the same thing happen that the 308 takes 40 odd grains to make happen.

Try the following

41.3 gr Alliant Reloader 15 work up to 41.7 gr around 42gr nice groups also

Winchester brass

CCI 200 Primers

2.815"OAL

150gr SMK or 150gr Berger VLD.

SCA

Went back and looked at some of my load data for the the 308 Obermeyer (308 Win w/0.333" nk). Using the 134/10ogive BIB bullets these powders worked the best in my rifle. Also used Lapua 308 win brass and Federal 210 primers.

N140 46.3 gn

748 47.6 gn

H322 42.4 gn

Benchmark 44.7 gn

N135 45 gn

Use these loads as a guide, reduce 10% and work up. In my rifle, I'm jumping the bullet. I've tried jammed, touching and slightly off the lands, but it seems I do not get fliers at my current seating depth. I'm around 0.030" off the lands.

If you are shooting HBR, I would recommend shooting 125-150 BR match bullets. 125gn is a good compromise. However, 150 are good also if your chamber is throated for them. In my 308 OBM the leade is just a little too short for 150's so I have not used them. Places the pressure ring of the bullet into the shoulder.

The one aspect that is nice about the 308 is that it is not really picky when it comes to loads. However, it does use more powder than a short 308, but there is no hassles making brass. It's a trade off.
