N133 in a 223

Doug Kennedy

Hemi Road Runner
Just got done shooting 4 5 shot groups with n133. Was always a H335 in 223. After my limted use of n133 I think I found a new powder!

The load was F205 primer new winchester brass 24.5 grains of n133 53 gr sierra hp match bullet OAL was 2.300

Rifle was a remington xr-100 with a weaver T-36 scope with a target dot.
1st group was around .578

2nd group .338

3rd group was .341

4th and final was .687.

The rifle has 50 shots down the barrel plus these groups. Over all i'm happy with this powder. My 1st time using it.

Was in to big of a hurry to set my ohler model 43 up and just use the chrony part of it.

I have Keith Chandler to thank for turning me on to n133 in a 223.

N-133 has always been an excellent choice for light to mid weight bullets in 223. N-135 is a great choice for the heavier 223 projectiles.:D

Doug

My XR-100/223 also likes 133. I have been using it for a couple
of years and has performed well for me. My old standby was
IMR-4198. Another advantage I like about 133 is how clean it
burns. It makes cleanup a bit easier.

I have got it to agg in the 3's with the following combination.
Lapua brass, Fed 205r primers,and Barts 52gr h/p f/b jambed.
Adding a Jewel 2oz br trigger will help you shoot smaller groups
also.

lapua brass is much more consistant, I shoot 25.3 grs of N 133, with coated 52 gr fowler/scheider accuracy bullets, 7 1/2 rem primers,,,,,,,,

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

n133

I get better groups in my .223 & .222 with 2230 shooting berger bullets then other powders. Years ago used BLC 2 with a 18 lb bench rifle, but the 2230 seems to work better over the last 10 years. craig

Been shooting v133 for 12 yrs in 222's and 223's. Before that, shot 4895. Outstanding accuracy and consistancy and have never had a rifle that didn't like it. Seating depth and neck tension are more important with v133 than the actual charge weight.

I recently tried N133 for the first time too. Using a TC Super 14 in .223 and a Rem 700 LTR 20" , also a .223.

The results were very encouraging for the first time out with a new powder! The average for three 5 shot groups @ 100yds with the 14" TC was a pleasing .716" using a charge of 23.0 grains , Sierra 52MK , Lapua brass and Fed 205M. Next time I want to see how it performs with the Berger 52.

The guy working the counter at Sinclair said there were better powder choices for .223 rifles. Although Sierra listed N133 as the accuracy load powder for the 55 grain .223 in the bolt rifle data. He said N133 would not perform well with the heavier 69MK.

I only loaded 5 rounds with the 69 MK with 21.7 N133 and CCI BR-4 and it fired a .593" from the 20" LTR. I am going to work up some more loads with N133 and the 69MK!

As the others have stated , a remarkably clean burning powder. I am glad Sinclair stocks it in 1lb containers. I may not have tried it if I had to buy 2lbs.

Thanks Doug.......

I'm glad things worked out for you! I got better accuracy with CCI BR-4's than Fed 205's...maybe you could give them a try and see your groups shrink even more.

All barrels and chambers are different. I have a minimum spec, non turn neck, zero freebore chamber in my 26" Hart 1-14 twist barrel.

I shoot groups in the 2's and smaller with 26.0g of N 133 in a IMI case with Rem 7 1/2 or CCI-BR-4 primer with the 50g Ballistic tips, yes ballistic tips at 3600 fps. 26.3g is absolute max in my rifle with the 50's at 3650.

With N-135 with the IMI brass with the BR-4 primer, 55g Nosler BT, I am getting 3500 with extreme accuracy.

Good luck!

I have a Savage LRPV in 223 with a 1x7 twist and am shooting Sierra
77 MK's. I'm thinking about trying N135 or N140 - is the N140 not recommended for the 223? I have a 6BR that I shoot Sierra 107 MK in and I thought about trying N140 in it - would be nice to have one powder that I could use in both.

Thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks

I would like to hear if someone has a load for the LRPV in a 1&9" twist, my friend has been trying the 69 grain sierra's, to shoot score in factory f class.

N135 will work well in both.

Funny that you get such good results with a 14 twist barrel and 50 grain balistic tip. I am about to try 25 grains of N133 with a 50 vmax bullet this weekend. I am launching mine out of a 24 inch 12 twist barrel. My cartridge over all length is 2.326 and my case length is 1.74. This should be fun.

I am currently loading 133 in 3 different 223's. 3400 is about par at
24.7 with berger 52's very consistant . No problems at 75-80 degrees.

N135 in .223...

Fixinit....I have a Savage M12 LRPV,.223 Rem,1/9 tw.,36X Leupold
I'm using 69gn Sierra,23.5gns N135,F205,Lapua brass(necks turned
to .0125",primer pockets uniformed). Bullets seated .010" off.
Groups @ 200yds under .5"...has shot .259" & .294" @ 200yds.
N140 works well too just not as good as N135.
Has Savage F-class stock & bedding/truing by Sharpshooters Supply.
Also using wind flags.
Hope this helps...good luck......gpoldblue

P.S. These are 5 shot groups.

.223?

hey gang...maybe talking out of turn here, but i've had great , consistent luck with varget...anyone else?

The best powder in my .223's was AA2015....25.5/50TNT=3620, 26.5/40BT=4010. Both shoot in the .2"s-.3"s through a 14twist Shilen.

That was until VV133 which is even better. In a 20"/14twist sporter weight truck gun the load is 27.5/40VMax=3895=about 3/8". Another barrel 26"/14twist, most accurate is 26.5/50BT=3713=about .2".

With 55's and that same 14twist Shilen, VV135 worked best.....27.5/55BK=3628=.2"s

Those VV133 and 135 powders are just perfect in a .223 size case. All loads are with Rem 7-1/2BR and very important.....IMI brass. Domestic brass probably wouldn't handle these loads, but they're just fine with IMI which is very strong.

Steve here...
I too have been using n133 for years... had great results in all my ar's
7/7 twist 8 twist and 12 twist. 14 twist 222 40xbr only gets n133
I only use the n133 with light bullets (52 Bergers 52 or 53 Matchkings or 40 Vmax's). I have fumbled with n135 and n140 with heavier bullets with dismal results usually only moa.
To date:
52 Bergers w N133:
40xbr has shot .306 5 shots at 200yds It usually shoots .5 to .7 at 200
52 Bergers w N133:
AR w/Krieger 12 twist has shot in the 6's and 7's at 200yds five shots but usually shoots 8's an 9's at 200yds
My 2 cents
Steven
