I like the bonus points - - -

The past IBS SOY format contained points for the matches one attended. I think, after having thought it over, I like the idea. Those of us who dig down deep and travel should have some reward for doing so I believe. I also like the extra points for high xes. It's sort of a kicker that adds chance into the format a bit more. I am ambivilent about the score points however. It gets quite busy with points, doesn't it ?

And the obvious question - - -

Is IBS now going to sponsor the awards for every State Championship? It would seem to me that the cost of something will have to go up to accomodate this. I think it is a great idea, by the way.

Points

We get 1 point for shooting 250 points at a match, regardless of distance. I'm curious what the community would think if the points were slightly different?

1 point for 250 at 100 yards.
2 points for 250 at 200 yards.
3 points for 250 at 300 yards.

Whatever the group who will compete in the run to be champion wants to do is OK. It isn't likely that anyone outside their geographical area will be able to be part of the deal. Whatever rules they set up will be fair for them.

We simply use a raw score. That seems to seperate the Wheat from the Chaf easy enough. I have allready stated our paramaters so I won't repeat it. Bottom line is one had better attend EVERY event unless they have shot their very best KILLER SCORES in the number of yardages required. Often those who attend ALL of the events have the best chance, regardless of the rules.

Looks great guys, ya'all did very well. Will there be a Factory, Custom and VFS? Just need to know how many guns I need to get ready this winter. Thanks for everyone's hard work in putting this together.

Good Format

The format looks good and appears to be fair for everyone. I have met with some resistance from the Club Board because of past monies being shipped to IBS rather then to the Club. I know it is not much but in todays economy they are pinching every penny.
Anyway, Good Job to all that have worked on this format.

Sponsors

Looks like a sound program. Now all that needs to be done is find some willing sponsors (like has happened in other states/regions) to get travelers made and to provide the annual trophies..

Thanks for all the positive comments and suggestions.

Regarding the bonus points for attendance, there are some of the better shooters that shoot group matches and cannot be at every one of the score shoots in this challenge. Of coarse, if they miss a match, they will not get bonus points and those who go to the match and do not shoot the group matches will gain points in this way. It is hoped that this will somewhat balance out the competition and give the non group shooters more of a chance of prevailing.

IBS has classifications set up for Varmint for Score, Hunter and Hunting Rifle. They do not have classes set up for factory, which is the shooters that we also want to attract. We don't know yet how this part of the challenge will be structured, but in cooperation with the ranges, we will be coming up with a fair and attractive competition for the new shooters and factory rifles.

We also hope to get some contributions for merchandise to be given out at many of the matches, which should also help with attendance and the excitement of the challenge. Francis has done an outstanding job of soliciting the vendors for their participation, and he has again indicated that he would do so for 2009.

We look forward to an exciting year and meeting lots of new shooters.

We still need your suggestions and any help in any way is greatly appreciated.

Good shooting,
Tom and Larry

Congratulations are in order to Tom Majewski for originating the concept, and to others, such as Larry Feusse in helping to implement a wonderful idea. My ear muffs are off you each of you gentlemen and to all those who have had a hand in moving it along!

I have been in contact with Tom, via phone and email, regarding this Championship Series. Although I am but one voice in the IBS (currently as Group Chairman), I believe we need to support this initiative and others like it.

For purposes of discussion, I have suggested to some of the IBS leadership that we foster state or regional championship series. The idea, however, is beyond the many "state championship" shoots now being conducted. Instead, the IBS would recognize, with a keeper or traveling trophy, a state or regional series consisting of at least four shoots conducted at a minimum of two different ranges. It would be up to the members in that locality to establish the series. This more expansive series of matches would be more meaningful than a single "championship" match. Also, Jim's idea of trophy sponsors is a good one and would ease the cost to the IBS. Based upon some information from our 2nd VP (and trophymeister) Wayne Shaw, travelers introduce many logistical problems and trophy disappearances, thus maybe we should be looking at keepers only. More to discuss...

By encouragng a series of shoots we hope to bring in more shooters-and clubs-into competitive benchrest shooting regardless of the discipline (score, group or long-range). I expect this proposal will be considered at the IBS Annual Meeting in January.
